Gav 1,708
How do you know the mother doesn't know what to do with them?
skycat 6,173
Ducks are notoriously lousy mothers! Compared to chickens at any rate.
Tis TM 8
How do you know the mother doesn't know what to do with them? She was happily watching the chickens attack them, when the ducklings were trying to run to who ever they could for warmth, they are still very unsteady on thier legs, stumbling over, and if I didn't move them, they would have been picked off quite quickly by the carions crows and magpies My other ducks have been great mothers, very protective and shielding them well, but this mum was far too relaxed! I wouldn't have taken them if I thought they weren't in any danger.
lurcher-lass 1
Its great rearing them from chicks, we had to rear a few of ares when we had them as the mother duck dis owned them, we also reared a goose, great fun!
Tis TM 8
Too right, its great for the kids to learn another side of keeping animals too, and understanding where their food comes from, and how its been reared.

Tis TM 8
how are they today? They're great thanks, in a big carboard box indoors, got the infa red lamp on them on half power, and quite high up, and they're loving it they have ad lib chick crumb and a plant pot saucer of water, and seem to be helping themselves very well. Time will tell I guess... hopefully I'll have some chicks hatching soon and might be able to integrate them with the broody hen??? never tried it before, but it might be worth a go. Thanks for asking x

BlueCoyote 0
i had to take up the chicks hatching yesterday because ants were attacking them i wonder if i can let them all hatch in safety then give them back to their mother? i left the eggs in the nest that didnt have a crack in them, but took up the ones where their bills were poking through. i'm sure its a horrible way to die, being eaten alive by ants.... have to locate that ant bed and kill the b*****ds....
