taning rabbit hides

iv'e seen a few (long-winded) explinations of how to tan hides on the net but cant find one that id think of trying i want to make scent balls and things like that for my terrior puppy when i get one but dont know how to tan hides!!! :icon_eek: can anyone help me here please :good:

you dont need to do anything at the hide just let it dry out it goes hard but it keeps the smell

 

are you sure its ok to do that :icon_eek: i wouldnt chance it personally

I used to do it that way in my younger days, and just recently did a squirrel skin, stretched out on a board with panel pins and left to dry, only took couple of days, I would think with a rabbit skin thats larger, you may be able to scrap a bit of the fat? off, once stretched

ok :D ill give her a go and see what i come up with (see if it rotts, ect) ill not be going out too soon tho as theres too many young rabbit out and i want to keep the population up as much as possible!! ((ovcourse) :tongue2:

they still smell a bit so i would imagine so

 

ok thankyou, i suppose theres ways to remidy the scent if its a little week :D

 

 

As kids we always used Borax from the chemist on fox pelts..but that was to soften them and make them pliable as well as cure them..which may defeat the object in what you are trying to achieve...ie retain some scent etc..it was'nt our aim though..fox pelts were stinking rammy..
