Just wanted a bit of advice please.

 

My 8 month old beddy whippet/grey is rabbit mad now and today my terrier snatched a baby rabbit, i threw it for merlin and she ran all over the field with it shaking it as she went. But there's no way she would bring it to me, she would run past me with it but then she was off again.

 

I've no doubt she will get the rabbits but i'm concerned she'll not retrieve. I have done some retrieve training but she changes when there is rabbit involved.

 

Let me know if you have any tips.

go in an alleyway with her,throw a dead rabbit or hide so she can only bring it back past you, train her with the rabbit basicaly.

you gotta remember shes 8 months old try putting a skin on a dummy and keep practicing your basic retrieves she'll come round

my pups 4 months an ive got him retrieving in exactly that way,a skin on a dummy.

Let her have a bit of glory.She will settle. I cant understand why everyone always bangs on about retrieving like its the most important aspect for a running dog. Personally I couldnt care a toss if they bring it back or not cos rabbit tastes like shit to me anyway. Why not just enjoy watching her enjoy herself. Be a spectator not a control freak.

i just kept on retreive training with a dummy 15min every day, sometimes with skin on,she dont always bring right to hand,close enough though,also i found with mine that when i took a shot rabbit back home, to show her, for first time when she was pup,she went mad over it, absolutly mental, but when she got her first rabbit on the lamp at 10month she took it serious and walked it back to me after a few whisstles,think you will find when she catches one for the first time,she will not run away and want to show tou what she has acheived.

retrieving is very important to me. i want to go into a field and get as many of them as possible, not catch one and scare all the others away. also if you have a very long run, i don't want to walk all the way over and scare everything away whilst trodging across the field.

Why would you not want a dog retrieving? Or is it more the case that YOU cant teach a dog to retrieve so you say you dont care about it!!!! the old addage of why have a dog and bark yourself springs to mind!!!

rabbit courses can go a fare distance....100yrds easy!! would you live to walk that far and even further to pick every rabbit up? if you get 20-30 thats a fair bit walking and a lot ov wasted time in my book.

put sum time in with ya dog mate givin it little treats when it brings the dummy back...it will soon click on..but its still only learnin mate.

They may taste like shit to you mate but i'm sure my ferrets would'nt agree.
