Guest Ditch_Shitter
Eamon; She's a f*cking little belter, mate! Showing demonstrable improvements each and every day. One week on look, and I barely know I have her here. She's just another part of the family and fits right in with our day to day doings. If she grows into any sort of Ratter, that'll just be the icing on the cake. As it is she's just a pleasure to have around. Can't thank you enough for bringing us together, mate! Now to explain all that to the rest of ye: I wanted a little rat sniffing / biting Dog and, since the JRT I picked up as a six week old at the horse sales had proven worse than useless, I'd been quietly and half minedly letting the word get out that I was after something with a bit more use to it. My idea was a 'Jacker', as I don't want anything going to ground on this badger infested land and expecting me to start digging the landscape up looking for its remains! Of course, living amongst fields full of cattle, I also needed something either 'stock broken, or else yet young enough to Be 'stock broken. Like, yeah; And if it could also shit gold and make me whiskey, then that too wouldn't be too much to be asking for, would it?! I wasn't holding my f*ckin breath! Then bugger me if I don't get a nudge from our Eamon. " Ye still looking for a Dog, Ditch? ". The rest is stretched out in her hay lined (WILKY made) Terrier Box beside me as I type this. The door's open and she's free to come and go. She just Likes it in there, when we're all quiet. Back to last Friday then: Eamon's turned up in my local town, sporting my favourate, German 'Flek Tarn' cammo as a tee shirt and producing this tiny little thing from out the back of his motor. The little Dog, unceremoniously hoisted out by the scruff, promptly reciprocated by pissing down poor Eamon's leg! In fact, it was only when I saw what was still wet and dribbling - aside from Eamons leg - that I realised the awaited one, of which we'd actually discussed relatively little by PM, was a Bitch! Bonus again! I'd just taken the impression it was to be a male and figured that would have to do. So, there I was, back home with a dinky little bitch Dog, five months old and of parentage which ..... well; Let's just call her a " Lakeland Terrier Type " and leave it at that Eamon had filled me in on all the relevant details. We've no compelling reason to suspect she'll insist on battling badgers, should she happen upon a hole full of them. She should certainly make a natural born rat sniffer and, as for biting them? We'll have to wait a while and see. Oh! At this point I Must make it clear: Eamon Mc. had No part in this Dogs breeding. He simply heard about her and negotiated with her breeder for me And that. so far, is about it really. I brought her home, a little chicken boned nervous wreck as she met my three much bigger Dogs in totally alien surroundings. And every day since that first evening, I've watched, delighted, as she's shed an inhibition a day. First adopting the bushes around my ditch and needing to be coaxed out by her little harness, only to bolt behind this work station for the evening, till I had to go in after her and gently lift her out of the dust and cobwebs. By this evening? I seem to have Always been able to open the cottage door in the 'morning' and simply let her rush out with the other Dogs. I then make a cup of tea, roll a fag and, at some point she'll come sauntering in to see what I'm up to and then go back out to her innocent fun. She simply chooses not to leave the compound and I simply don't give her much thought When ever I'm good and ready, I go out and there she is. I gather her up and pop her in her box while I release the Chain Dog. Then I let her out again to resume what ever she does out there. Our favourite bit of all though is after their dinner. I'm getting in the habit, with this gorgeous weather and my relaxed mood, of just popping a Guinness and going out to lay in the grass of the compound, watching the birds, scratching my Dogs and chilling out completely. I normally like to lay about down by the old ash heap, so I can watch the field below. " Rats ", as I've come to call her, has adopted an old oil drum amidst the once rat ridden heap as her own little spot in the world. It suits her and she looks good in it: The Kingdom of Rats Let's see if she turns out half as good as she looks. Either way; She's got the hall marks of a keeper! Quote Link to post
