Guest Ditch_Shitter
Ok. The Gardai have me down as a Pest Controller. They thus let me have a .22 Hornet as my first rifle, no questions asked. Virtually unheard of here. But they appear to recognise a man needs the tools to do his job. Cool. Only some of ye here will maybe remember that I had a long and wrangling period, on the Trapping board, where I was trying to fathom out what I would ever actually do with a live caught mink in a cage trap. I still haven't satisfactorally sorted that one to this day. John Galway has already stated that they don't consider Humane Despatch good enough reason to hold a .22 rimfire pistol. But they're a lot easier on shotguns. I wonder where they stand on this middle of the whole issue question of a shotgun in the form of a pistol? I mean, ok; Taking it that they consider an Air Pistol still a 'Hand Gun' and so are hysterical about even those; It doesn't bode well. But then, we are talking about a .410 with extremely short barrels. 'Effective' range so up close and personal a knife would be more scary. Then, of course, my own trump card; I'm a professional Pest Controller and can very much demonstrate a particularly obvious need as reason for having one. Perhaps my work might be the Only reason they'd allow one? I can't see many other practical applications. Slaughtermen use Captive Bolts ~ ye can't use those through a mink cage. What a vet may cary, I wouldn't know. But I know what I need and know a shotgun would be far safer for the purpose than a .22 anyway. I feel I have a case that would stand up in court. Anyone got any input for me, please? What do ye know? Thanks. Quote Link to post
mac tire 0
Hey DS, I have a .22 handgun and I am a memeber of a club in Co. Tyrone, just over the river Finn for me. Im guessing that to be seen as a pistol it would need to be rifled not a smooth bore, so it would be classed as a shotgun and then be under the minimum barrel length. Im open to correction on the above however, but I dont think you wouldn't have a hope of getting a 'pistol' of this style. Im fairly sure aswell that a 'pistol or handgun' cannot be used on any living ceature in Ireland and therefore that would rule out humane dispatch, they will just tell you to use a knife (wouldn't fancy that aganist a mink) or use a shotgun... Any vets around me that ever needed any animal put down, that they couldnt inject, always 'mention' to the farmer that a man with a rifle is your best bet, off the record of course.. They are tighting up the regulations here for handgun ownership, being a member of a club will not cut the cheese, there has been chat of producing club membership attendance records and competion entry records to justify ownership...Hope this helps Mac Quote Link to post

cúagusgiorraí 57
Hi DS This probably wont help you, and you probably already know this, but most of the people around here who trap mink, put the cage with mink in a barrel of water. Drowning seems to be the prefered method for the dispatch of kittens, puppies, mink, rat, fox cubs. I guess their thinking is "sure, why waste a bullet?" Quote Link to post

Guest Ditch_Shitter
Right, before anyone starts calling for a rope ..... Not looking good then, is it? Granted, most of what I ever hear is annecdotal. But then, I speak to the Gards and they tend to go all wide eyed and start spluttering at the very mention of a " Pistol ". Most famously was when I enquired at the desk about an Air Pistol ~ same thing in mind then, see? ~ Gard almost ducked at the mention of the word and stared at me as if I'd just become something with horns! " What for?! " He asked, eyes bulging. " Ye can't just carry it about with ye, ye know! " Like; WTF?! That's when My eyes bulged and I started backing away myself; Before I got arrested for talk liable to cause fear in a Gard! Jeez! It's a bugger. Everyone I turn to will have a different answer. Mheanwhile I'm in so many lumbers because, in some areas of my work, I'm operating by the seat of my pants. One of my mates, a Gun Club member, even guessed that shooting a caged rat or mink may be against the law of " Fair Law ". I.e. I'd legally have to release it. Let it get so far away. Then blow it to kingdom come with a shotgun?! The cultural 'nudge, nudge, wink, wink' is well and good. Only I'm a trained preofessional and, as such, I habitually fill our signed and dated report sheets for the jobs I do. I'm Not about to write; " I did this 'Pre Ban'. " on one of those! COMPO 54
Ditchy I know you want a .410 pistol and i can understand the attraction myself (did you ever see that John Wayne film with the kid with really fast reactions but poor eyesight- John Wayne was teaching him to be a gunslinger and as he had shit eyesight JW had two shotguns made into pistols for him - fast as f**k and with an element of error allowed he was then a top gunslinger-they were side by side jobs ) But for despatch in cage traps why not just a single barrelled .410 http://www.baikalinc.ru/en/company/33.html i have one of these and its not much bigger than a pistol and i can use it single handed, ideal for use in cage's with teh 2inch cartridges ?? Just a suggestion Compo Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Hi Ditch, Have you actually spoken to the Gardai about this issue. How long ago did you enquire about the Air Pistol? However unlikely, they may have eased or have more experience of this problem. Regards SS Quote Link to post
