Is that a 3" Mag chambered one, Lev's? Or is that rabbit even more pathetically small than it looks?

Just kidding, mate. I had a little .410 for years. Best damn shotgun I ever had and dropped what ever I hit with it. Rat to fox. A pleasure to take out

I'm a total novice when it comes to guns and so I'll start at the bottom, I only got a gun licence to carry out earthwork and have been granted a section 5 firearms so when the right pistol comes along I'll be adding that to my collection.

Seeing as I had an empty gun cabinet and shotgun licence I thought why not so I went and bought the .410 this afternoon it's perfect for keeping the ferrets fed through the summer and already I can see myself spending many hours out with it.

Tell ye what, mate; You'll spend MANY happy ours with a .410! Many, many! They're a bloody delight to carry. I'd as soon have one again as a 12 bore. That's the truth.

Must say though; the .410 pistol? I'm squirming with envy! About the only time I ever met one was pushing thirty years ago now. Mate showed me, at a show he was running just outside Lewes, in Sussex. Double barrelled hammer job it was. Something about it just turned my screw! My eyes and things were bulging! Fancied the hell out of one ever since.

Now, ironically, it'd be the perfect little piece for me. Loaded up with light, 2" cartridges it would indeed be the despatch tool supreme.

Ye've got me thinking now; I wonder if - over here - they consider a shotgun pistol the same way they do any other 'Handgun'?

:hmm: Now ye've gone and set me off again, look!

Ye are very true in what ya say MANY happy hours with the .410, ohhh I remember when I were a lad!

After a few ciders though I cant get the picture of Mark Brandon Chopper Read out of my head, I only watched it the other night and it was there, a .410 pistol! I may be wrong he could be a big handed guy and made a rifle look like a peashooter,,,,,,

Cider again I forgot what I was going to put? OHHHH yeah D/S nice post again, when is the book out ?

sawn off shotguns .....

:icon_eek: Good god, yes! Know what, Bry; It's never once in my life even entered my head that that's precisely what they are, aren't they?! SHhh IT!

Lev's; So, what's this license ye have there then, mate? Is it, basicly, the one that lets ye hold a sawn off? Don't / Didn't deer packs have the same thing? I've nothing to do with 'Buck Hounds', but I believe I read somewhere once that the Huntsman carried a - what ammounts to, in retrospect - sawn off. Presumably a bloody 12 bore too! F*ck! :icon_eek:

Just goes to show ye how an innocent mans mind can work, eh? In the hands of a trusted fellow Field Sportsman? I saw it as a thing of beauty. In the hands of some three hole balaclava'd c*** screaming in my face ....? I don't even want to think about that again! Moving swiftly on .....

D/S ... when is the book out ?

 If I thought I could flog a copy for every time some bugger's asked me that ....?

Over here Ditch,

There is only one exemption from the ban of pistols. This is for humane despatch. They are held on a firearms certificate and the majority of the .410 shot pistols are old single barrels which have been cut down along with either a pistol grip fitted or the stock cut to the pistol grip.

There are many professions which justify the need. Many hunt kennels and terriermen have them for humane despatch of livestock or foxes underground. Deer stalkers can have them for the same reason, if they can prove they need them, such as if he stalks in a forest which is very dense and not easy to use a rifle in, he may get one. They are legally entitled. But the majority are for humane despatch. .22 and .32 are also common rifled calibres which are used. Though I know of at least one man who has .44 Rem Mag for humane despatch. Think his name was Harry :whistling:

It's for 'terrierwork' or 'teckelwork' in my case, and yes basically it is a sawn off shotgun ticket if you look at it like that. Buck and Staghounds do/did have bigger sawn offs you're quite right because obviously carrying a longer shotgun on a horse isn't practical and when the stag stops at bay the gun would be very close normally so he could take a safe shot.

My licence reads like this "The .410 shot pistol shall be used for vermin control on land deemed suitable by the Chief Officer of Police for the area where the land is situated and over which the holder has lawful authority to shoot" I'm not sure what the minimum length of barrel I can have is but I know there are quite a lot of longer pistols on the market that I can legally have 'sawn off' :victory:

SS; Harry Calaghan carried a Smith and Wesson

Lev's; I'm sick with envy! No two ways about it. I don't know why. It's just seeing that little double barrel all those years ago so blew me away. Looking back, I think perhaps it might have had damascus barrels. If so, it would have effected me more than Japanese porn!

So ye ticket doesn't specify single or double? Oh dear god! I'd just Have To go for a double. Obviously, I'd only ever load one chamber. But side by side, those little barrels create a thing of beauty. I mean; It's a tool, sure. But why shouldn't a man have a tool he can simply enjoy sitting at home, cleaning and studying?

I can't wait to see the pic's when ye get one! :clapper:

Too true he did Ditch, A S&W in .44 Rem Mag. Though he fired .44 Specials through it! :notworthy:

I too am envious of you Lev, maybe I could justify one for the despatch of foxes in live catch traps on the shoot.
