Hi folks,

So, I'm hoping to get the chance to bring my Remington VL SS Thumbhole .223 to a gunsmith this summer to get some improvements done. One in particular, to install a Jewell trigger, or take advice from gunsmith on a better/alternative route. Since I'll be getting that done for sure, I'm just wondering what else I should get done to improve my set up. Besides getting someone with a better shot to shoot it ;) Sunday was the last day I had it out, best two groups were a 0.5" three shot group and a 0.6" three shot group, both at 100 yards. I had given it a damn good scrubbing earlier that day and it needed a few rounds through it to calm down. Trigger will definately improve it  and me. I'm feeding it 40 grain Hornady Vmax (moly coated).

I hope to apply for a moderator later on in the year. I've to sound out that application process yet so getting it screw cut is an option that's up in the air with me at the moment. Possible recrown job at the same time.

So what else should I be considering for my foxing rig?

Thanks in advance

John

ok there john.do you reload your own ammo ? or is it because your in the R.O.I. that your restricted.if not then in my opinion yes to a new trigger, the re-crown well only if it needs it and if your getting .5-.6 with factory ammo id leave it alone. maybe getting the rifle bedded will help you,as you state keeping the barrel clean helps if you want your gun to shoot the eyes off a fly its reloading by a long way to bring out the best in any rifle, but maybe thats a no-no.you probably have a good scope on now so your options are as above.hope this helps you mate :drink:

Hi Gary,

Not allowed to reload as far as I know. I'd love to though, even bought the books on it. The reason I mentioned recrown was because of the possibility of getting it screw cut for a mod. Yes, bedding is something that could be done. I'm thinking of changing to using Kroil and JB Bore Paste or possibly Butches Bore Shine in the cleaning department, using Hoppes Benchrest at the moment, just patches, no brushes. Nightforce NXS5.5-22x56 is the scope.

Cheers fo rthat

John i always shoot a 5 shot group to get the true results of what a bullet is doing. So i'd start there. If your still getting anywhere near .5 .6 inches with factory ammo while shooting five shot groups then the only thing i would add is a jewel trigger, And leave well enough alone...........

I'll give it a go SS, though I'll be shitting myself before trying it and possibly cursing you afterwards :clapper: If your ears start seriously burning next weekend for no apparent reason you'll know why now

Fair enough john. but you will notice that shooting 5 shot groups will pay off, for the simple reason you have to concentrate no end to achieve the best possible results.

And this will pay of in your shooting. breathing, wait for the bodies natural pause, trigger control, body alignment, it's all good, let me know how it goes or not if thats the case........................ :icon_eek::gunsmilie:

john.jb paste is for really tough carbon and copper fouling you should only use it as a last resort i use it every 300-350 rounds in all my rifles just to give them a really good scrub out.as for kroil and butches well thats a good choice i use it 50/50 mixed for all cleaning carbon and copper fouling for really serious copper fouling try using wipe out foam its very good.hoppes is also very good as you say its also good with a dash of kroil in it but not as good as b.b.s.

Hi John

Yes recommend Kano Kriol and JB Compound. The Kano is a lubricant so use it sparingly. JB Compound every 50 shots or so but when cleaning the bore with it put most effort into scrubbing the throat of the barrel as that is where a carbon ring will form and most solvents will not clear this. Oh and do NOT let the patch with JB on it exit the crown and on no account use JB with a phosphor brush -JB is far too abrasive.

I use MC7 to get rid of copper fouling having tried numerous alternatives and the beauty of this solvent is that I get 1st round accuracy after cleaning

there trigger will be the best thing you can get for the rifle i would say. your be surprized how much that can help the groups. get the rifle bedded to for peace of mind ;) if your having it screwcut i would get it recrowned to at the same time to make sure  and when you get it back give it a good clean to make sure there isnt any little bits of metal left over from the work that has been done.

its a shame you cant reload as i bet that would improve the rifle to. im oing halfs on a reloading kit in the summer with a friend. i think its the best thing you can do as you can improve the rifles accuracy its cheaper to and you can up and download the power of the rifle.

Cost me 300 Euro Jamie and it's the best 300 Euro I've spent on shooting. I've already installed it and shot two three shot groups lol, so much for waiting... Bit breezy out this evening, also it's a long walk with gear to where I zero so the first group I shot too soon and was just under an inch. I expected that because of how the crosshairs was bobbing around. By the second group my heart had settled down and bang + bang + bang = 0.3" group :D Next fine calm day that comes along and if I'm not working it I plan to shoot four five shot groups properly taking my time and that will tell a better story. Right now I'm very happy. I've shot Remington, Sako, Tikka and Timney triggers a fair bit, the Jewell runs away laughing from then it's that good, best money I've ever spent on a firearm! It's set light but safe for the field, there's now no anticipation of the round being fired, no pressure working against you in the trigger to build up to the bang, finger on, a little pressure and away she goes! It's a dream to shoot!!!!!!!

thats sound great john it can be adjust to with out the stock out the action cant it ?

and was it a direct fit ? ie'' you never had to take anything off the the stock so it fitted.

as i hear on some rifles you have to work on the stock a little to make it fit :)

Hi Jamie,

Sorry, been having internet connection woes... Well, to adjust on my rifle I'd need to remove the trigger guard, other rifles may well adjust as they are. Guy who manages the gunshope swore I wouldn't have to adjust my stock, had the Dremel out that night though. Problem with two pins coming out the side of the trigger unit not fitting. When I got that bit fitting in nicely I also had to remove a bit forward as the safety wouldn't engage to safe mode, only fire. Got it all sorted now anyway and am delighted with it!
