Just back from a wee trip up to Glen Etive beside Glen Coe. Just headed up for piece and quiet and a bit of walking with the dog.

Anyway, we were going to try one of the hills the following morning so thought we would head up for 15 minutes to see if it was possible with the dogs. We had only walked 5 minutes from the road and there was the carcass of a young stag with most of the saddle and haunches missing. Thought this was strange as the carcasses are usually taken.

Next morning we headed up the hill and after an hour we were reaching a ridge, my dog bolted off and I could smell a carcass again. Over the ridge there was another Stag, this time nothing removed (other than the damage done by birds and flies).

What is the situation with this, are there culls in etive, have the stags died of 'natural' causes? They werent massive so assuming only a few years old.

will try and put some pics up

natural causes i would guess, up here you can get hard weather right up to and into may..alot of that area is owned by my bosses family and doubt very much that they or any other professional stalkers would leave beasts like that.. could also be old injurys or ill health..

edited to add.... the first picture id say it was injured during last seasons rut and died not long after, being a ten plus pointer id say it held a heard of hinds and was involved in a territorial fight with a spiker ...its belly is showing signs of lets say "amourouse activitys" the black stain on its fur is cause during mating and just for the record it stinks like feck

Thanks for the reply alimac. Ws just surprised at how close they were to each other. And as I say the fact that one was so near the road.

At least the big man had a chance to enjoy himself before he went

Cant get enough of Etive, missed it as soon as I got home.

Will head back up in a couple of weeks.

Quick question if anyone knows. If you were to take the antlers from those dead stags would you be breaking any laws or any estate laws?

im sure there will be something there that gets classed as theft there, but id dare say 95 % of hill stalkers would tell you to help your self , or just give you some of the stack that they always have hidden away.... but having said that you would still be on the estate until they were hidden in your motor so the chances of being rumbbled are small, id dare bet there are hundreds of antlers picked and taken by ramblers every year..
