lucky 578
thats an exellent acheivement Royston2 .i always start the season with the intention of recording my own tallys but a quarter of the way through i just get side tracked and forget about writing it down, but i always take photos of everything i catch,so over the years i have filled a few albums which i never get bored of looking through, i dont think i have ever come close to that amount of deer in a season or even 2 with a single dog but i probably dont run half as many deer as i do foxes, i just love running foxes and if the situation comes (which it some times does) i will drive past a herd of deer just to have a run on a fox . my dogs are pretty much fox dogs and not of the right make up to be classed as good deer dogs, but they take the odd one. the best acheivement i have in my diary is from 2002 the first season for my dog Tyke (18 month old). he ran caught and killed 21 foxes and 8 deer without missing one and carried on the rest of the season taking a pretty large amount of foxes and around 20 deer all of which were roe, often taking 3 foxes and a deer in the same night.this dog is in my mind the best dog i have owned and probably the best i ever will own, but age is getting the better of him now and it's a shame to see a dog missing things that he would have taken with ease a year or so back but thats dogs for you and thats why i think diarys and photos are a good idea as it gives you something to remember them by when there gone TYKE Quote Link to post

IanB 0
Did the dog pull them three single handed kane Not having a dig mate, I'm just amazed at the amount of deer you must have access to, and for a dog thats just turned 2 year old, is she 2? to take a 100 in its first 12 months working through summer/winter single handed is amazing.. what was the catch rate, did shes miss many she ran, even catching 1 out of every 2 ran is fairplay....they must be like rats ... let me know if theres any space to tag along when your next out.. My friends dog had a long run on a munty once she put it up in a wood went afther it through 2 fields before she nailed it ! when we gutted it she had a fully devolped baby in her so she couldnt have been far of giveing birth !! this deer never run like it was pregnant you couldnt tell it pregnant so what are you do ? Kane 2
The dog was only a youngster in that particular pic so he did have help on a couple yes, just to get him started. Now it is hard to believe the number of deer in some localities, deer realy arent my thing Ill run them in my area simply because they are there. If I walk from my house to do a bit of lamping its remarkable if I DONT see a dozen roe.Sussex,Surrey and Hampshire is generaly over run with them Hertfordshire Wiltshire also seems to be crawling with them.Until you have lamped these area or even bushed them daytime it is hard to believe the numbers of roe and muntjac. Roystan2,Jordan,Ratkilla all thought I was joking about fox numbers(urban) in my area until they actualy came out on the lamp with me or out with the terriers. One thing I never run in my area is hares they just dont exist,so its not all roses. Now I know lads that arent on the computer and they do a 100 in a season if not more and they realy dont see it as a big deal.Insted of just sitting on the computer basicly calling us liers you should travel down south even without a dog just to see for yourselves(sorry no invites LOL).As for freezer space just give it a moments thought and you can probably imagine where a lot of the deer end up. Chilli is quite right in what he says about muntjac as for roe unless your willing to keep your lurcher on his lead all summer accidents will happen. Edited January 9, 2006 by Kane Quote Link to post

Royston2 0
My bitch took her first deer at 8 months of age the beddy cross pushed out a muntie the brindle bitch stood out of cover as per normal caught sight and coursed the muntie across the field i couldn`t believe it when she nailed it but she did..The bitch had shown very little interest in anything else rats or rabbits but when she ran this it was totally different she then took a roe weeks later single handed nice strong buck again unreal this is when i started to tally up...From then on all was accounted for i haven`t counted any that have been taken doubled up so she could have pulled even more but who knows more than one dog was of at the time and when caught out of sight who is to say who pulled what....Start of september was excellent i had 11 first week then 6 then 9 as from then on when the crops where down and i was out a bit later on in the day things stayed steady i was having 3 late in the day 3 times a week occasionally only doing one in a session but usually 2 or 3....I am out every morning with out fail at 6 then midday walk in my lunch break then in the evening no lamp nothing all in quarry rich areas if i am lamping that night she will be kept on the lead to keep her fresh other wise ran of the lead and i can`t guarante anything but i would be prety sure i would here the sweet sound we all here when one is pulled....My partner used to walk her until she decided to let her of the lead she never new what to do when the bitch grabbed a muntie in cover on a nice warm day about 1 o clock in the afternoon on a busy cycle path, all she could do was wait until it was dead and anyone who takes alot of muntie will realise they take some killing but what else was there to do i later when back from work picked it up no waist at all For who ever is interested my dogs and my family all eat the venison taken, believe me there aint alot when you got 6 dogs to feed plus kane gets a fair bit aswell for his family and dogs i also sell some whole beasts to certain people who are close usually for about £20 so all in all it all goes hopefully this will clear things up i doubt it for some because i am sure some don`t wish to want to believe this it has certainly made me think again before posting Quote Link to post

Tarmac 1
A very impressive tally mate, and for such a small bitch, standing at 24' did you say- is very good. it really is unbelieveable the amount of deer down your end of the country, before i was taken on nights out there, i was been told the numbers of deer normally seen in a night, and to tell you the truth i thought it was a wind up, until i got there, . All the best for the future mate, Quote Link to post
DiStuRBeD 0
half your luck mate, we dont really get deer where i am, wish to hell we did we do get kangaroos by the million, and if those deer are as plentiful as the roos are here u could knock 100 easy in a year Quote Link to post

Run the bucks only, problem solved, if there are hundreds to pick from down there is this not a wiser thing to do than taking nearly fully term does?, maybe im just getting soft in my old age but i would rather stop the dog than run on something bellied up.
