Barrel Screw Cutting

Recommended Posts

It seems that everyone it taking the P**s at the moment, I have just spoken to 2 seperate "dealers" and have been quoted £175 and £205.

Stuff that for a laugh, can someone please point me in the direction of someone who can screw cut at a sensible price, hopefully while I wait, more than happy to drive 100 miles from Reading for the job (further if its a good price and a good job).

Many thanks.

Decker i take it you asked turners, just out of interest how much were they? you could ask francis lovell in witney or adenbourne. sorry i don't have their numbers.

No No No, it is with great regret (as they are an old established and historically fine gunmaker) and my "local", but frankly they are a joke now!

9 times out of ten they never have what you want, prices are silly, staff knowledge is poor and you get the impression you have broken into their tea break every time you walk in!

Shame, I would love to support my local dealer, but they need a serious kick up the backside!

a lot of work goes into threading a barrel if its done properly and to send it for proof as well.so in real terms the prices you state are not bad its the time factor, but if a job is worth doing well then its worth waiting for".no point spoiling the ship for a halfpenny of tar".

Hi just to tell you i got my 243 screw cut for a sound moderater it cost me 300 pounds

A top quality job can be done in minutes for £15 - £25 I understand, but we are all expected to roll over and pay crazy margins to everyone, the figures I have been quoted are ridiculous, £300 for a screw cut is obscene!

I only paid £250 for my last rimfire brand new (THE WHOLE GUN) and that was pre cut, so how can these stupid figures be justified just to cut the barrel!

Take the barrelled action into your local engineering works and ask them who they'd recommend..... chances are he'll say " I'll sort that one evening for £20." Despite what the gun trade would like you too believe it's not rocket science, more GCSE metal work! Plus most engineering workshops have cnc lathes and highly skilled operators who do 50 hours a week, every week on a lathe.

As for proofing after a muzzle thread, that is farcical, what pressure is there at the muzzle?.... your going to put a tin plate can on there and you don't envisage that buckling under the strain.

There's a "gunsmith" up this way that would charge approx £50-£80 HOWEVER.......

a friend of mine out his .22 CZ in for shortening to 13 or 14 inches, screw cut etc etc & now it is never ever consistent.

Strangest thing is - none of my factory moderators will fit his rifle & his mod doesn't fit anything else.

Looking at the work done, it's as if the thread or pitch is different and the barrel has not be re crowned, straight cut with a thread put on.

Once you take the mod off it's generally ok for a couple of shots but thats about it.

Needless to say I don't want to mention the name.

It is daft what some people charge.

Deker, if you're down in Devon soon and could be there for 4 days or so, the man in the Gunroom quoted me £75 for sorting out my 22-250. I should think it would be more to lop off your Tikka barrel a bit, but he's very reasonable.

Failing that Turners are in fact worth asking as they are better than they were, and also Andy is worth an ask (though he wasn't as cheap as I hope when I mentioned it to him before).

Regarding the 243, I'd get one that's been cut, it's far less hassle, and if we all do that then eventually they will all be cut because nobody will sell any guns otherwise :D
