Cheshire Poacher 6
If you have took that dog to the vet and he said there is nowt he can do shoot the vet and take the dog to a proper vet that needs a stitch or two. A good vet would stitch that i have seen throat injures in terriers back in the olden days and seen vets clean and stich them up no problem Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
For a start you need to get an Elizabethan collar on her: it's a wide plastic funnel that fits round the dog's neck and extends to just beyond its nose; if the wound is where it looks as though it is then the collar can sit well below it so the wound would be protected by the collar if she tries to scratch it. The vet should have told you to do that if they were any good at all! However, if the wound is too far down the neck for a collar to be fitted then you could try taping her hind feet inside padded socks so at least she won't do so much damage if she does try and scratch it. To be honest I'm amazed she tried to scratch that being so sore and fresh. Bathe it in salt water every day and get some Intrasite gel (from the vet) and smooth that on to the raw flesh to stop it drying out and irritating her. A wound that big needs to heal very slowly from the middle, and needs cleaning carefully every day if it is not to get infected as obviously the dog cant' lick it herself. If you took her to a vet and the vet didn't even trim the fur from around the edges and reccomend the above treatment then I think you should change your vet! Edited to add: CP: you beat me to it regarding the vet! Quote Link to post
dogs-n-natives 1,182
You shouldnt just leave it! The least you need to do is make sure its kept clean. And dosent get infected. I would have thoroughly cleaned it out straight away. Then put a few stitches into it. Then put a sterile pad over it(kind with sticky edges. And held on with vet-wrap. If the dog is a bad scratter, would put a 'lampshade' collar on aswell. May need antibiotics, may not. Hope this helps mate, had 3 or 4 like that (or worse) to deal with, with my lurcher. Helps having a vet in the family though!! Edited to add that the wound would need daily cleaning and a new sterile pad. Edited May 8, 2008 by dogs-n-natives Quote Link to post

This will keep it open and it wil take longer to heal. Quote Link to post

FJager 0
Thump the vet and get some sort of human or animal disifectant on it, should sought the problem. Quote Link to post
cúagusgiorraí 57
That sort of wound, has to be left open to the air. Keep it clean, and put some honey on it everyday. Dont use a very strong disinfectant, dilute it way down. A strong disinfectant can hinder the healing process. Quote Link to post

There's very few dogs that would lick a wound so much that it won't heal. The position of the wound does mean that it probably couldn't be stitched as there is too much movement in that area and the stitches might tear out: that is probably why the vet wouldn't do it. The problem with putting a photo up on a forum is that we can't see EXACTLY how things really are in the flesh. I've just had a young dog do a jagged skin tear in his chest going over a barbed wire fence: right underneath and the lowest point of his chest. OK, so I could have stapled it, but his good friends, a couple of the bitches, have been keeping it clean for him to the extent that he will go and stand next to one of them if he feels it needs 'treatment'. 10 days later and it is almost healed despite the fact that the wound was slightly bigger than a 50pence piece to begin with.
