lurcher types

Recommended Posts

Right then...........

at the risk of upsetting/ boring people or going over old ground I have a query for you all,

I would like opinions about lurcher type, and suitability for me and my needs,

Quarry...

I will be mainly using it for rabbits but want it to be capable of taking fox's (etc) too.

the dog....

Idealy it would be calm, not too hyper, fairly easily trainable, able to mix with other dogs and people, but can turn it on when needed.

well socialised goes without saying but i guess that would be down to the breeder.

Me....

I will be training it myself, bearing in mind I have trained dogs before but only basics, never trained working dogs let alone a lurcher.

I know I'm asking a lot ( maybe too much) but hey.... you gotta try,

as always any info would be great,

and Lastly....

if anyone knows of any such lurchers available, I want one.

idealy a bitch pup, but any age considered, I'm in the West Midlands but willing to travel for the right pooch,

thanks guys,

yis, V

when ever i get a pup i only purchase from stock that i have seen worked or from people who have recomended it, i never buy from adverts from papers , the best stock never need to be advertised.

i would go down the reliable road and go for a 3/4 grey 1/4 collie , they poscess plenty of speed and brains, they will do fox aswell if introduced propperly,

but dont be buying a hancock , or you will be just wasting your time and money. all the ones ive seen yapped , but some people are not put off by that.

good luck in your search

Good advice, 3/4 grey 1/4 collies are a good allround cross :good:

If it wasnt for my terriers I think I would probably go for 1st or 2nd cross Bedlington Greyhound all the ones Ive seen enter easily to rabbit will knock over foxes and are a joy to own 3/4Gryhound/Collies there are a lot of good ones of those about aswell. It realy all depends on how immportant the fox killing aspect is to you.Almost any reasonably bred lurcher will catch rabbits but its not every lurcher(not even ones bred for the job)that will take foxes.

As for people not replying to questions at the moment, its January I would hope a lot of them are out there putting meat in the freezer :D

YOU WONT GO FAR WRONG WITH A BEDDY GREYHOUND CROSS.GOOD RABBITING DOGS AND SOLID ON FOX.BUT AFTER A DOGS COME TO GRIPS WITH FOXYS,THEY WONT BE MUCH GOOD ON RABBITS THAT YOU INTEND TO EAT.THAT GOES FOR MOST OF THE CROSSES THAT WORK FOX!!SO IF YOU INTEND TO EAT YOUR GAME,BE IT FUR OR FEATHER,KEEP AWAY FROM THE STUFF THAT FIGHTS AND BITES BACK.

now v

youv,e missed the boat on a nice little blue broken bitch,it was a 3/4 grey/1/4 deerhound x3/4 grey/1/4 bed she was 18 months old and 25in she was 100%in every way,i seen this bitch work on many occasions and i was impressed every time r/h/f/d. if i had room i would of owned this bitch now but i wasn,t going to sacrifise any of my dogs, anyway the reason i told you about this bitch was the lad whose got it now also has a bull/grey bitch and it,s not getting on with it so the lad said if they don,t settle the new bitch will have to go back to my [bANNED TEXT] so if he does ill give you a shout.but ye as shaun v said about the 3/4 grey 1/4 collie or a 3/4 grey1/4 bed i personally would recommend for an all rounder :good:
