Very sad loss last night......

Now i'm not a fan of going for a shine this time of year, just never seems right for me.

A mate of mine has asked me for a bit now, to help him out thinning some rabbits on his land. He has a young collie x on and though shaping up well, he's still very puppyish, so I was asked to give him a lift.

Ok, not a problem we have been before and to be honest it would be a good opportunity to keep Bella going, as she's been doing so well.

First bit of wind for a bit an it's GO!

First field and a few sat out, wanted to see his young dog so he got first slip.... missed, though getting better, a good effort. Trouble was, although his recall is good, on getting back it was 'playtime' with Bella, took a min and a firm command to get him back under control, bunnies gone, so next field.

This field is long, with a wide tree line that runs its length. Big trees, though widely spaced between.

So its left side to the trees, with the beam sweeping the field to our right.

A 'cracker' 20yards out and clapped in the grass. Bella's just started on the squatters, with three to her credit.

She's seen that ruby eye and she's off.....

A yard away the quarry's done the same, looked like its moved towards her for a second and she strikes.....missed!! But its heading further out...... 'go on girl!!'

Shes back on terms and strikes again.....ooh, another miss and over shot by a mile, 'steady girl'. Its turned back and headed for home, she's a lot of ground to make up now....

Not a problem, she's got speed to spare, right behind and its 'snap', 'snap', 'snap' but this fellas just jinking enough to keep his tail and knows home is a yard off...... he makes the trees before I realise, too hooked on my Bella 'buzz'.....

Felt my heart the second she entered, she's hit cover before and done well but I knew this time she was just to close behind and moving way to fast......

Still don't know if I heard the thud, just 'sort of knew' it was coming and blocked it out. James heard it.....

I called twice.....nothing....... and ran in.....

Found her on the other side, lay in front of a huge wind fall trunk that was right across her path, her neck broken.

Was about a 12" gap underneath, just right for the rabbit but not for my little 23" speed demon!!

Sick as I felt, all I could think about was how was I gonna tell Tracy.

See, Bella was Tracy's dog, she'll always say she is mine or ours but......

Chirk show is on this Sunday and a year ago at Chirk i was 'conned' by Tracy into taking my Bull x into the ring.... emergency pee, she said....... I found her after the class, she was sat in the car cradleing a little red, 6 week old, piss soaked wretch that we had passed by in a cage, for sale.

Now I was looking for a new dog but I'm always very breeding orientated, this 'of pedigree unknown' was the last thing I wanted!

My plea's to take her back fell on deaf ears and I eventually walked over to ask the 'breeder' just what cross/crosses she was.... Well, it was this and this and this......just a 'bitsa' really, bred 'just for the rabbits'.

From the minute she came home Tracy put so much effort in and this little dog just responded so well, a joy to bring up and train.

She grew into a little stunner, I thought she was beautiful. I've not owned a 'traditional' type (lookin) lurcher for over 15 years but to me, this little thing was sommat special, deffinatley not 'just for the rabbits'.

At home it was all fun fun fun, out in the field just work work work... a total natural, I was so impressed by all she did.....

Our future looked so bright......

Go easy girl.....

We'll miss you
