Guest bezza
I am interested in the legal situation too, Is a dog owner legally reponsible if his dog attacks a cat in his own garden? Is a dog owner legally responsible if his dog seizes a cat whilst the dog is on a lead? I don't want to upset anyone, especially not my neighbours, but some cats have very little common sense when it comes to dogs and have no sense of self preservation. Definitive advice appreciated. lurchergrrl 1,441
Nothing legal can be done as far as I know. Especially if you're dog is on your property or out in public space. This recently happened to me .... but instead of pretending it didn't happen, I knocked on some doors to find out who the cat belonged to. I apologised to them, as I was genuinely sorry for what happened. I think she really wanted to let fly at me, but because I obviously cared about what happend she wasn't too bad. I usually muzzle the dog in that area but was distracted by something and just forgot. I wouldn't want someone searching fruitlessly, worrying and wondering what happened to their pet. You don't have to like cats to respect the people who do like them. I had carefully wrapped the cat in a blanket and bag, and offered it back to them to bury it. It's not fair on the people who might love it, to walk away and sling the cat into a bin somewhere. Quote Link to post

cúagusgiorraí 57
I dont know about the laws in the UK, but in Ireland, whippets, greyhounds and crosses thereof, must be kept on a lead in public. It is to safegaurd small animals and pets. But not many people know this. I let the dogs off the lead when it is quiet and not many people about. I dont mind if the dogs got a feral but I would mind if it was someone pet. But think of it this way. I keep my dogs under control, cat owners should do the same and not let them stray and kill all the nesting birds, and get impregnated every season. They are asking for a dead cat, if it is allowed to wander, be it by car or dog. And Joeorcheston, I wouldnt worry about it, the cat shouldnt be there in the first place in my opinion. Kill all ferals Edited May 8, 2008 by cúagusgiorraà Quote Link to post

Guest lurcherboy2008
dont worry mate my dogs had hold of 1 in a street, i let the dogs off on a local park for a run about and 1 of the lurchers spotted the cat about 200 yds away walking across a road, they shot after it , me shouting at them but this time the recall did not work (they always listen to recall). anyways i had a visit off the rspca they started askin questions, i said i dont want to say anything untill i have a solicitor, went to see my solicitor with the rspca woman had a long discussion about what was going to happen and the rspca just came to a decision that its just a cat and dog thing, nothing u can do about it so no need to worry mate Quote Link to post
Brummy 9
At the the end of the day we keep hunting dogs so naturally they will hunt and kill other animals. A cat is just as natural a quarry to a dog as a rabbit or deer unless they are bought up round them and properly broken to them (cats). However my ex -girlfriend had a cat and my Beddy/Whippet bitch was fine with it as it was there before her and I broke her to it. Strangely when I got rid of the ex and her poxy cat the next time my bitch (the dog!) saw a farm cat she messed it up good !! Ever since that day 3 years ago she hates them with absolute venom !! I now know if there is a cat about in cover or treed because she because she becomes very excited !! As far as I'm concerned they're bloody vermin ! Quote Link to post
