Does anyone have any info on feeding dogs pork. For years a few people have said that pork is bad for dogs. I have never seen any dog food which has the flavouring other than pigs ears.

Never fed my dogs it but i dont really know why. Cheers chris

I used to work on a farm, and for years a lurcher called henry, used to eat pigs and pigglets from the dead pits.. He was as fat as a pig

I used to feed pork all the time and never had any bother. I used to get heads, tails and trotters for nowt so I wasn't going to turn that down. Never had a problem with it either.

A lot of people consider it wormy which is where the problem stems from. If you are on top of the worming then I don't see a drama.

I think a lot of the worm concerns came from problems with infection by trichinella BUT trichinella isn't a problem in the UK these days.

If anyone is worried then just freeze meat for couple of days because that would kill the trichinella worms.

the reason it's not considered the best dog food is simple because of the high incedence of worm infestation and other disease agents that are transferable. freezing and cooking at the proper temps and periods will cover these issues. the loose stools is common because of the high protein and fat. most dogs are acustomed to a mill made diet that is made with grains and their additional fiber is just apart of it. this fiber causes larger more uniform stools. also the fat content in wild pigs is generaly much lower then that of domestic animals. the parasite load can also be much higher in wild animals along with a higher chance for disease. as a experiment try swiching your dog to a meat or mostly meat based feed and watch the stools become smaller and firmer along with less frequent. make sure that the vitamin and minerals are added if this diet is prolonged.
