Ruger 10/22 problem

Recommended Posts

Hi have been knocking down the local rabbit population using a ruger 10/22 and subsonics.

Keep getting problems with jamming.

Sometimes the spent shell doesnt fully eject and then no autoload!

Taken to gunshop who tried it using other ammo ie not subsonic and it was fine :icon_redface:

Anyone have any idea why it would jam on subsonics only?

i give my ruger 10/22T`s a complete strip down every 500 -/+ shots & also the moderator.

you would be surprises with the amount of shit that gets built up over a small amount of time.

a few things that i would reccommend which i have also done to my own rifles.

# replace the EDM Extractor.

# replace the Recoil buffer. " quietens the action down "

# extended Volquartsen bolt handle. " better improved spring "

# complete strip down every 500 -/+ shots. as said above.

# automatic bolt release / extended magazine release.

# use a piece of wet & dry to smoothen either side of the ejector so it sits loose.

i can honestly say out of the 1000`s of rounds i put through my model T rugers, ive only ever had a handfull of jams. when they do start jamming its an indication that a clean is needed.

i had the exact problems when i bought my last ruger on certain types of ammo untill i made a few changes, now i can throw anything through it..

Sorry guys but I have to laugh :whistling::rofl::victory::clapper: Same thing every time..How come the 10-22 is so popular when everyone buys one, throws away all the bits and replaces them with aftermarket spares!!!

If I bought a car and it was that C**p I had to throw most of it way a replace it with other manufacturers spares I would not be turning round and saying what a great car (GUN) it is!!!

And the simple answer as to why your 10-22 struggles with sub sonic ammo is IT'S A 10-22

I'll get my coat whilst you all discuss!

Cheers!!

end of the day deker, their a cheap knock about gun... mine serves me well.. mine are both accurate out to the distances needed, & that does me.

& were not talking about a car, were on about a rifle that costs a few hundred pound.

I think you are somewhat missing the spirit of the response, and the point of my response.

The advice is simple..Don't buy a 10-22 if you want a trouble free life or unless you intend to throw most of it away and buy a bucket load of spares, and spend more time cleaning it that shooting it!!

Out of the box many of them will struggle to cycle subs!

Am I wrong???

Chill out Richie.. you have already confirmed most of what I said in your original response!

youre not wrong....

i have to say, the basic models are shite ... ive only owned the target versions which already come with "some " upgrades..

but still need tweaking.

& yes, cleaning it on a regular basis is essential & a bit of a pain.

Nowt wrong with a 10/22, any and all auto cycling weapons need the carbon build up cleaned out wether using subs or HV rounds, pure and simple, the fact the subs don't produce a whole lot of gas will mean the weapon will need cleaning more regularly, anyone that says the weapon doesn't need regular cleaning obviously hasn't fired too many shots out of an auto, the M16 was manufactured to be a self cleaning weapon, well that idea went out the window very fast.

Also with lubrication try some dry lube, wet lubes can attract dust and a lot of the times this will stop the action.

Also have a gunsmith look at the extractor claw.

You're wrong ;)

I've had two now, the basic shitty one and the Target model. Both were 100% happy with subsonic ammo, but the shitty one has a trigger so bad that it's suitable for tin cans at 25 yards, and that's about it. The Target model has a better barrel and a better trigger, and that's pretty much it. The standard version needs a new trigger but then will cycle subs and happily knock over bunny rabbits all day long.

Ive had a 10/22 for about three years now. Had more trouble with the magazines than the rifle.

Only gets problems if its not clean.

My friends was jamming in a similar fashion, ill ask him what the problem was and how he fixed it.

Mine is no special model, just a standard 10/22 with a decent scope and its a useful tool. Great fun!

Hope you get to the root of the problem masmiffy

if ya using winchester subs the wax build up is the cause, i simple flush out with crc or wd40 will get you up and running again, i've had mine 20 years and never had a problem with it once you get in a pattern of cleaning it.

never had to buy any aftermarket parts and it is a reliable rifle that keeps on going.

the more you can wear them in the better just keep pumping the rounds in them.

a squirt of crc down the mag will help too....i use factory mags and have no problems at all.

they are bloody good rifles, the only thing i had done to mine is a mild trigger job a few years back and it's shot alot of animals from rats to red deer.

The reason semis jam up is they are american its the same with their shotguns! they are not made for use with subs, i fire 200-300 shots a night when i'm rabbiting, so have to clean it every day, but then after that many shots any rifle deserves it(i don't clean the barrel that often as lead jacketed bullets don't damage the same!!

To use subs it just has to be kept clean, the only reason high velocity work is they have more power which is only really force the bolt over loads of crap so keeping it clean is better any way!!!

My ruger is wonderful, i've changed nothing apart from a 12" barrel being put on and that was dirt cheap cos it was a 10/22, it works fine all the time(when i clean it) and i only had it barreled cos i shoot out of a vehicle and its very handy!! accurate enough to head shoot rabbits at 60-70yards, and because its a ruger i can whack over 4-5 rabbits in the time a bolt action would knock over 1!!!!

I do hate people commenting and generalising on stuff they've never used!!!!

If anyone needs advice on rugers the people to call are south yorkshire shooting supplies......absolutely brilliant every time and so helpful!!
