bloodlines/breeding peaked ?

Recommended Posts

ive been thinking for a while now about all this merlin x eve lines in coursing dogs pretty much somewhere along the line most of the top strains are related sometimes several times , so this is line breeding as they say..eventually all these top dogs and breeding has peaked at some point , i believe it has peaked long ago and i reckon all the great bloodlines are saturated with too much line breeding ...i know of several lads that have put there heavy line bred dogs back to pure salukis and even one well known chap has gone back to greyhound to out cross his strain

foxy , charlie , caulfields joe , snowy, blondie , jamies jack etc are all related somewhere so what do you coursing lads reckon will be the next move to start producing great dogs/bitches again ?

always breed best to best proven hare killers, use dogs with the strength and a desire to take their quarry at all costs, by adding like you have said maybe a greyhound with high prey drive, one that stays sound and prefrebally one from proven marathon dogs and bitches now and again to bring in fresh blood or a well bred coursing saluki that can do the business.they will also always be the odd freak of nature that pops up of dubious breeding that more importantly can take hares in large numbers ie laddie the accident. and was there a dog-bitch somewhere along the line called blackarse? these will be used at stud or as a brood, if there prodigy proves themselves these will be used in doing so bringing in new blood, so long as there are men with the urge to breed and train dogs to run hares class will always come to the surface in one form or another in doing so it will be used to produce, so imo we have no worrys.

like i prove my point in your answer , the dogs you mention were from nearly 2 decades ago , what great dogs are around now ? the best i know of have to be at least 6 or 7 years old ! there is obviously lots of well bred dogs around a lot more than ever , but not as many good match dogs , like i said the bloodlines are weakening due to too much line breeding ,

theres been plenty of breeding with good old dogs and bitches and very well bred dogs and bitches , and people are still running the fens and fields same as always , as only few have ever had permission on the fens anyway , so there should still be some good match dogs being talked about by the coursing lads but sadly there is not , most of the big names are still going strong

Even the breeding to good Salukis is going to be a problem in the future as most of the Salukis in the UK are also heavily line bred, especially the kizzy/pharoah stuff.

We need some good eatern imports, Kurdish village bred Salukiare winning hands down in comps in the mid east rather than the rich sheikhs own lines (which are often recycled western salukis so I'm told). Thats what is needed IMO tough gritty Salukis where only the strongest survive. Out cross the best of your lines to these and I think you would be onto a winner.

Then again I'm just a rabbit hunter what would I know. :whistling:

DO YOU FEEL THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BREED A RESTRICTED GENE POOL AND GET QUALITY DOGS? JUST WONDERING BECAUSE THE BREEDERS HERE THAT HAVE HAD A PROVEN WORKING STRAIN SELDOM GO TO OUT SIDE BLOOD AND WHEN THEY DO IT IS PROBABLY CLOSELY RELATED OR VERY SIMILIAR. THESE SAME BREEDERS ARE ALLSO VERY PROTECTIVE OF THEIR BLOOD LINES . IS THE HYBRID VIGOR THAT IMPORTANT IN LURCHERS OR IS IT JUST A CONTINUAL QWEST FOR PERFECTION?

why not find a good fast lurcher bitch that can kill hares and would hopefully leave speed/mouth/preydrive then strengthen it with a pure saluki that can and do kill hares not one thats allright when he gets there or would kill alot of hares if he had a mouth but one that lacks nothing with blow to spare? i no if it was that easy we would all have them but its just a thought. something i will try in the near future

how difficult is it to import one of these kurdish salukis is it cost prohibitive for one person to do or does it need a syndicate of people to undertake it.trader :thumbs:
