Would you sell your pups to a pet home?

Recommended Posts

I agree your dogs are not really what a pet home requires and best left for working homes!!

At the same time I think you may be suprised at what some pet only dogs are capable of!!

If they are pet only how would you know? Obviously not evey badly bred dog is going to be a bad dog. But your chances are much higher if you get a well bred dog, obviously.

Oh and why are you on a hunting forum if you dont hunt

I am on a hunting form to learn about running dogs! I posted a while back to see if there were any objections! You obviously missed that post as you didn't object? I have had running dogs for the last 16years so I enjoy reading about them! Is that a problem?

It may suprise you that pet/rescued lurchers do get out and about. They don't just go to the park and run in circles! My dogs get walked in the country so I know what they are capable of and need to control them so they don't go about killing all the deer!

I have spoken to many people with rescued hounds that have to watch them as they will take Deer, Hare fox ect, some are very good huters! You don't know that all rescues are badly bred, I understand for working dogs your not going to go to your local rescue as they are an unkown, i was just pointed out that there are some very good dogs in pet homes. There not all a pile of crap, there owneres take pride in keeping them in top condition. You will think that is a waste as they are not used for hunting but if rabbit is all they can hunt my salukis would find that very boring! My dog seem well happy, well stimulated, well exerciesed and they don't go rabbiting!

When did i say i objected, i was jsut asking why your on one, becuase you have lurchers, give the impression they are brilliant hunters, but you don't go hunting which gives the impression you dont like going hunting. Therfore the question. Quite clearly there arnt no good hunting dogs in pet homes, if you keep you dog on a lead all the time how do you know its good? There may be potentially good dogs in pet homes. Just becuase its cuaght the odd whatever here and there its not GOOD. From the way you write you sound like one of the kids on the estates with there "game" staffxmastiffx w.e else pit bulls because it killed sally the shitzu and bites when excited.

and I just answered your question why I am here and I asked if it was ok when I joined! I am not saying my dogs are brilliant hunters I was saying they can take deer, if we went out hunting them! Buy we don't go out hunting and i need to have control of them. i am sure in someone elses hands, using them for hunting they may not be that bad! I am not here to blow my dogs hunting ability I don't take them hunting. I am happy for them not to hunt! Would rather take on failed workers!!! This is not what my post is about, my dogs and what they do! In what way do I sound like a 'kid on a housing estate' because I said rabbits would bore the salukis?? I was just saying to the other poster that he may be suprised by some of the dogs in pet homes. At that point I wasn't considering my own..

Now the real point of my post was to get opinions if I were to get another dog, would a pup be silly as it may have a strong prey drive that doesn't suit my life style!! Trying to be responsible, getting advice from the people who breed them! Not here to argue my dogs are the best hunters, clearly they are not becuase we don't go hunting!! I don't keep my dogs on lead any of the time that is how I know my dogs!!

I personaly think its better if the dog is tryed first then given to the pet home because good hunting dogs ar hard enough to come accross and knowing that the dog could be the best in the country and hes just lying there in frount of the fire would be the killer for me !

That is good advice thanks!! Suppose really what I am looking for, honest advice not to argue about my dogs be great killing machines, which they are not, as it isn't what we do!!

So why dont you just get another mellow (or one that would suit you) Adult that has failed to work? Would that not be the best option all round, for you and the dog too.

Well I have been thinking pup because you then aren't taking on someone elses problems! Most of my hounds have come as rescues , some have come as young dogs! You don't always get adults that are mellow with regards to temperament. I need cat safe which I have managed in the past with the adults I have taken on. Just getting advice and checking what would happen if i approaced someone for a pup! I am thinking of a full saluki at the moment. There are two litters at the moment from working stock. Not sure if working stock would suit. Just looking at all my options!! Not out to argue with anyone and fair enough if people don't want to sell to me, not a problem!

Thanks for the advice!

I told you why I am on here, which is what I said when I introduced myself when I joined! I have running dogs and like to read a learn about running dogs! I couldn't be an anti with the dogs I have, they may not be the best workers but are lurchers and have and instinct to chase and kill! So would be difficult for someone like me to be against hunting, even tho I don't hunt! I can leave if bothers you? I certainly wouldn't want to give you 'the spooks'! Spook is my dogs name!

I am aware of where I can get saluki pups from working stock and I have had my question answered and who knows may have another hound in the not so far future, will see what happens!

I also don't really see much wrong with learning about hunting and what my dogs are all about? Will help in training and controlling them! But as I said if you have a problem I can go?

who mentiond you leaven bud? I know what your saying tho, you will be surprised how addictive hunting is for most its just a hobby but when it becomes an obsession it cant be frightning my advice dont buy a terrier you dont already have one you will never go back ! :victory:

It wasn't you it was timmy and tony85n

, have asked why I am here, even after saying why I am here tony85 seems scared? I really don't want to worry people! I know it can be a worry, my lurcher chased a hare the other day, just as we bumped into the game keeper :wallbash: , he didn't catch but I was shitting myself, It happened so quick I didn't have time to stop him! Not sure what would have happenened if he did catch it. As I said I am not really in the postition to be against with the dogs I have! Have to say loved watching him run!! :D

ya knew there was big ears there tho? what did the gamekeeper say?

all the best keep hunting or em what ever it is you do :tongue2:

didn't know there were hare there, as they have only appeared this year, didn't see any last year. Not one of my usual walks just head out there about once a month. The game keeper didn't say anything but did approach my friend with her lurchers previous to that day and said he didn't want long dogs on the hill as they were losing loads of deer :icon_eek: So was a bit worried as he is obviously down on long dogs and I had two with me! Though one wears a muzzle in deer country and they both have bells on to try and worn the deer off! I know you think I am mad but ha ho thats what we do :icon_redface:

Has your dog actually takin deer before? why the muzzle? sure how do ya know the dog wont be more affraid of the deer then the deer ar of them when confronted?

Trust me I know :icon_eek: This one is only interested in deer, completely ignores fox, ex travellers dog! I have much better control over him now!

Then why not get into the hunting so if you have a dog that courses and is mad for deer theres loads of fellas out there who ar trying dogs seasons upon seasons over and cant get the dogs right and you have a dog there that will do em but you dont hunt i reckon take the muzzle and bells off and enjoy !

At times I have thougth about going rabbiting, and then chicken out, oh and I am a her not a him, city girl form canada. Have been here for about 20 years and have had hunting dogs for a most of the time here. But I am learning about them everyday! I think that was my point earlier. That a dog in a pet home, kept in great shape can work well, we just do our best to control it! I do think my boys, especailly the young lurcher would be good in good hands, they are genererally well controlled but would do it if allowed and they aren't scared! No they don't go killing madly like the council estate bull/mastif and I don't go about braging I was saying dogs kept in the right condition and treated well will do what comes naturally, well thats what I found anyway, but I realise I don't know anything! Also not sure how much the saluki boy would be interested in rabbit! So thats me not here to catch anyone out. There are a few people I know on this sight. Have met Mark with all the salukis. He would sell me a saluki, I thinkd :D , so I'm not that bad!!

Before anybody gets any bright ideas, I'm not in disguise as Spookster  Just so happens tho, that we both come from the same city, but Spook has been here ages

I really think you should give the rabbiting thing a go Spook, your dogs ran so well last year at Peterborough, they'd no doubt really enjoy it.

ah why didnt you say you where a girl i had an idea you where but then said na but sure any fine girl with salukis even if there not into hunting ar still in my good books!

I should have said, bit unfair, but I think the bells and muzzle may be a girlie thing :icon_redface:

I have to say so myself even if I don't like stereoptyping! Love salukis and have had a few!

I do think about rabbiting jenny, Dino would love it, spook would to start I think, but he didn't show interest in the hare. Seems to be a deer man. :hmm: Though he did enjoy lure coursing, so who knows!
