Guest Ditch_Shitter
Quite possibly one of the first Baikal's. They came out about thirty - thirty five years back, if I remember correctly? One of those would certainly be aptly considered 'old' now. Thing is, the original ones at least were definately 'Budget' guns. Low price range. So now ye'd best ask a Gunsmith's opinion. He'll have had plenty of time to familiarise himself with any likely or inherrant eventuallities with the make / model and so should be able to advise ye on wether or not the thing's A/ Safe to continue using as is and B/ Economically viable to sort out. Perhaps someone on here may have had a similar problem with a similar gun? Other than that, a Gunsmith will be the man best set to advise ye. Anyway; What ever else ye may glean from members sat at their keyboards, it's always far and away best to have Any older gun one comes into posession of given the once over by a Gunsmith. Just to illustrate that fact with a little example: I was in my Gunnie's the other week and spotted a nice old side by side leaned in a corner. I picked it up and asked if it was for sale. I was sorry to hear it was a customers, brought in for a once over and that the poor man was going to be told it was a complete write off! Running my eyes over the gun and glancing up the barrels I questioned that verdict. Dave sighed. Said, " Ditch, the problems with that gun are ..... " He then took a deep breath and began rattling off such a long list of faults - some of them quite hideous (like the Bulge in one of the barrels?! F*cked if I'd spotted That!) - that I actually felt a lot better having carefully placed the ghastly thing back in its corner and wiped my hands! It was a blown off firers head waiting to happen! Looked perfectly alright to me So, like I say; Get it checked. The bloke may have been firing it for a few decades now. It could well be simply worn out. It has one, obvious Major and unattended fault. Ye don't want to find a hidden one only when it manifests itself and maims ye, do ye? Pop it down to the Gunsmiths. And please let us know how ye get on. That'll provide some basis of guidance for anyone in a similar position in future Quote Link to post

It is probably a Baikal. Although I have not owned a S/S Baikal, I do own a U/O Baikal and love it. It is a bit heavy at the front end (or it may be me getting old). It must be an early Baikal. But the Firing pin in a Baikal is not a problem to replace (for a gunsmith). Quote Link to post
Guest basil46
Memories, i had my first shotgun in 1977 which, was a s/s baikel (hammerless). Great guns for the price. Back then you could buy a shotgun out of a mail order catalogue and the license was an a4 size with the crown stamped in the corner which disappeared if the license got wet. When my dad had his shotgun in the fifties/ sixties he kept it in the tractor shed when we kids came along, i kept mine in the corner of my bedroom as you didn`t need cabinets back then. If i remember correctly, cartridges were about £2.50 to £3.00 for 25. I also remember my dad using Eley cartridges which were cardboard instead of plastic and if they got wet, wouldn`t go in the breach of the gun. basil46. Quote Link to post
comanche 3,061
Yes ,agree with just about everyone ,probably is a Baikal.Has it got what appears to be a brown bakalite butt -piece? There were a few Baikal hammer-guns turning up "as new "certainly up until 15 years ago because a mate bought one .Guess what ? Only one barrel worked properly.Rest of the gun -incredibly over-engineered and sturdy . Quote Link to post
