Remington 700SPS

Recommended Posts

I think I have seen a bit on this before but help me out please.

I am thinking about investing in a 700SPS but historically the triggers were not meant to be great but with a bit of work could be eased up and made "satisfactory". Apparently Remington now have "NEW" triggers which are fit for nothing but the scrap heap, requiring replacement aftermarket triggers at £100+.

Can anyone give me their experiences of the old and new triggers, is too much being made of this or are they really as bad as they seem?

I ask the question as I already have a Tikka T3 Lite and was thinking about investing in another gun and trying the Remingtom for a change, but if I'm going to have to buy a new trigger I will simply buy another T3 instead.

Many thanks.

G'day Deker, I have just bought a new SPS and the trigger is nothing short of awesome, I think way too much is being made of this on here, I would say a lot of the commentors have not even fired them, they are just going on heresay. Straight up mate, great piece of kit, there is absolutely no play in the trigger, it just cleanly goes off. Gunsmith adjustable to your required pressure, it is the best trigger I have ever squeezed, I looked at a lot of brands when I was looking for a new .270 and kept coming back to the 700.

The X-Mark pro trigger? It's in my Remington 700 VL SS. Even though I have zero complaints about it I'll be upgrading to a Jewell - just to be a tart. Adjust it down as far as it is safe, small blob of locking compound (I think) on the screw and away you go. I've also had a Tikka in the past, and currently have a Sako Quad. To my mind there's sod all difference in triggers now, the Remington trigger could be a bit heavier than the Tikkas but I'm still getting regular 0.5" to 0.75" (mostly closer to 0.5") groups with mine, factory ammo, factory rifle, factory trigger. If it's not adjusted, then yes it's too heavy. But, to say it's only fit for the scrapheap is a load of horseshit IMO. It's a decent factory trigger which I have no complaints about.

the winchester im buying are the same there triggers are a little heavy to. the guy that is selling it to me said he wouldnt bother with the aftermarket ones he as a jewel and said its good but not worth the money in his eyes. a bit of polishing of the trigger is more then i would need on the winchester he said after all a jewel would be good if i shot on a range but i dont. so i want it just right but safe for vermin control.

DEKER.i havnt owned a remmy for about 7 yrs now but a gunsmith i know removes the trigger assembly and polishes the whole thing with jewellers paste its a very -very fine abrhasive.he then buffs it with a cordless drill and a buffing pad, dont know which one though!

reassembled they are like a jewell trigger[well as near as can be].he charges nothing to his customers as long as he is doing other work for them .me iv had 2 jewell triggers and for the money there worth it BUT if you can work on yours as described then you will save ££££.a pumice stone will also take off any crap on a trigger then wet/dry paper will get nearly the same results. if your choosing a rifle based on the trigger then i think you need to rethink -id go for the remmy.

i'm going remi as you can upgrade bits so much easier with so much choice, its equal to the rest of the factory guns but with more scope for improvements...........the jewell triggers are simply gorgeous though.......so i'll be getting my self one

I'm not buying the gun on the trigger, I've looked long and hard at a lot of rifles recently..the brief is Synthetic stock, stainless barrel, detachable mag, light field gun, screw cut and a moderator...scopes, mounts, slings etc make it too complicated as a starting point!

So the answer is Tikka or Sako, but Remington do have a reputation for accuracy and I was looking for a change from Tikka rather than having yet another clone in the cabinet with a different calibre. The Remington does not have a detachable mag, the barrel seems like a flag pole, and if the trigger is s**t then things stack up against it compared to the Tikka which ticks more boxes to start with! Oh yes..then there is that little problem of money which has to be considered in the whole package, and of course that strange phenomenon of personal choice which is why we all have so many different guns!

Decisions Decisions :hmm::hmm:

They do the RWS with Stainless and plastic stock for about £550, ticks all the boxes...

Remington SPS is about the same sort of money. I would get one of those, and see if you can back out of the sale of your ASE moderator - balance on an SPS was fine, when I tried it anyway. Not needing a new mod would save you a bit.

how much you want for the ase mod ? and what thread size is it ? im intrested in it :thumbs: and have a slot

Thinking about it... RWS might well take that ASE mod as well. Might be worth waiting to see which 243 you get, or are you pretty much decided on another Tikka? (since that obviously won't take that moderator ;))
