Scopes & loss of zero

I have an MTC viper on my rimfire. it lost zero the other day so I ended up with a maimed rabbit. Not good, and have re-zeroed it. Thing is, I needed to apply a slight thump to lock its turret back down (really slight slap would be better actually...) and it shifted zero a half, 3/4 inch to the left at 50 yards.

 

I know scopes will lose zero with an impact, but this was pretty light, certainly no more severe than it could in any one of a number of hunting situations. Is this normal?

I had the same experience on my rimfire when it had a Nikko Nighteater on it, It would lose zero when only bumped or knocked and not bad knocks either, at a 100 yard zero it would be 3 inches to the left. I have taken it off now and taken it back, I have a Leupold on it now.

I wouldnt say it is normal but it obviously happens a more than thought, I just thought it was a dogdy scope or that the mounts were loose but they were fine as was the scope, tight as necessary

If nothing is loose, mounts etc. and you've tried it with another scope I'd send it back. I know people connected with MTC, perhaps the owners are members of the BBS. GaryC and sammy could be their names, I used to know but fog of time... They seemed decent and eager to put forward a good service so if you think it's the scope I'd get in touch with them and see what the story is.

 

Also if it's possible, try the scope on another rifle that you know is shooting as it should. That should narrow down the possibilities.

Not wanting to be too hasty, I have the Viper on the 223 now, and the Nikko on the rimfire. I will re-zero and test.

 

One thing though, while standing up waiting to be let into its cabinet, the 223 fell over and did take a knock, so be interesting to see where it shoots now - it got zeroed today at Bisley at 200 yards...

I have a MTC Viper on my air rifle and have knocked/bumped it a few times. Whilst I don't shoot it out to 200 yds it is zeroed at 50 yds and has never moved off - Guess your scope needs to be checked out.

Well, it had gone way off to the left again. We got it sorted at Bisley at 200, then today at 100 it was 3 or so inches left, and a few high. I would expect the few high, but not to the left as well.

 

So trying to bring it in, I got it pretty close and changed a couple of clicks, and then it was inches off again. I give up with the bloody thing, I will drop Gary/Sammy an email in the morning. In the meantime I have a PoS Richter Optik on there, zero it tomorrow and see how it goes. It's naff, but it worked on my Sako...
