jigsaw 11,899
learned brethern, after recieving a calf from a farmer friend, and after skinning, dissecting, portioning and feeding it to my bunch of savages,i then turned my attention to the skin.I tacked it tightly to the shed door and proceeded to scrape and remove any traces of flesh and fat and add liberal and copius ammounts of tabel salt.after a week of this it was dried and i removed it from the door.unfortunately its like a body going through the throes of rigamortis. The quest i seek is,HOW THE HELL DO I SOFTEN IT. is there anything i can do to return it to a supple state,i have somewhere in the house a set of very large horns belonging to a bull once owned by another farmer friend.MY intentions are to wrap the skin between the horns, stich said same and mount the lot.Any helpful advice would be much appreciated. pointer28 1
How about something like saddle soap or any of the leather softeners that you will get in any equestrian or saddlery shop? Just an idea, I don't know if it will work but it certainly keeps saddles and bridle leather very soft and supple.

spade 224
one of the jobs was a tanner.......in the 18th and 19th century they used to soak hides in water and dog shit........... Dog shit in tanning terms is called puer & was often supplied by hunt kennels. I've also heard that soaking skins in piss works a treat
