murray 0
As the title suggests how long will i need to wait after doing a warren to do it again, the bloke who sold me my ferrets said the scent of ferret is in the burrow for about 3 months, is this true??????? I hope this isnt a stupid question but i am fairly new to ferreting Quote Link to post
runforyourlife 361
As a rule i wouldnt usually ferret a hole again, unless you see visually that they are using it again. In saying that in march, i had 3 rabbits out of a borrow. The next my dogs put one to ground in the same hole. I ferreted it and bolted 2! So there was one already in there..... only the day after. cheers Russ Quote Link to post
IanB 0
All depends on the density of rabbits in the area murray, if you work a series of warrens and clear them then effectively its going to take a while for others to move in, if your only doing warrens here and there, they will be getting used again fairly quickly, moving in from surrounding area.... The one 8,477
Had them out a burrow a week after we ferreted it ,i reckon rabbits from poorer area's or lower ranking bun's are moving about and colonise empty burrows . Ive a wee field of set a side between three farm's and i can ferret up there every week and get rabbits till ive ferreted all the surrounding land. On the other hand if were doing a farm and dont get finished when we start again we will drop back a bit to see if the burrow's are inhabbited Quote Link to post

TOMO 26,145
did a contract job , ferreting last week , first day got 25 missed one rabbit. went round with the rifle later that eavning , watched 3 rabbits go in the warren , you are always going to miss a few, and rabbits know if there is a preddator in there warrens. if you do a good job however, the next time you go you are going to get less and of course you will ferret empty warrens, unless using a marking dog Quote Link to post
woodga 170
iv had people out this season only a week apart and done the same warrens over i use the dog to mark up and we allways get around the thirty mark .the rabbits move in quickly up here and occupy empty warrens if you have rabbits in numbers on your ground they will use recently ferreted warrens no problem and with the dog indicating the occupied holes only takes a minute and we take a lot of rabbits that other wise would be missed Quote Link to post

We ferret the same hedgerow holes every week, and there always used again. Also have found rabbits will move straight back in to warrens that have been ferreted. The ferret scent dosent seem to put them off. Quote Link to post
Rabbithunter 456
I went out one morning, few years ago, with my old dog. The fields i were in all came off a lonning, and down to a wood. So all roughly the same length. They were quite narrow. ANd there was quite a few "ferreters dream" burrows. Anyway after watching the bunnys for a while, it was apparent that they were "warren hopping" So, you maybe get 15 out of one warren, in one day, and the next day, another 10 'take over' Quote Link to post
Rabbithunter 456
another example. I once ferreted a hedgerow and bolted 8 rabbits, only caught 6. I went back, better equipped, with the long nets etc.... and killed 18 Quote Link to post
