Guest 6ppc
Standard twist on a 22-250 is 1:14 this will stabalise a 55 grain bullet fine.Standard twist on a 223 is 1:12 this is because if you want to shoot 55grain bullets in a 223 the case does not have the capacity to drive them fast enough to stabalise in a 1:14 twist but with the extra velocity of the 22-250 they can stabalise in a 1:14 twist. Also it is not the weight of the bullet that affects stability it is the length of it.you can shoot a 63 grain flat base in a 1:14 twist and it will stabalise no prob but the nosler ballistic tips can occasionally not stabalise properly due to them being a long bullet. 55 v-max are shorter than the ballistic tip and easily stabalise! nutshot 0
just been out today and sited in my tikka properly , so i thought i would let you know the results. winchester 50 gr,s 3/4 inch group with 5 shots .very pleased with this ,had a bit of spare time so i tryed the federal 55 gr,s which i had the problems with ;2 1/2 inch group which was better than the original 4 inch group. so it goes to show the problem was with the heavier bullets, but it also shows that cleaning the barrel has helped to .going to try and get some 40 gr,s next and see how these shoot,i will keep you all informed . Guest 1nz
thanks for your help pegandgun ,no it has,nt been threaded met , but i will do as you say with the scope and mounts . and also try some different ammo to . have you any ideas as to [bANNED TEXT] factory ammo would be worth trying as i hav,nt got any reloading gear and really the time to do it either hey mate. i have a ruger ultra light 223rem that behaved exactly as yours is doing. i think you'll find the barrel needs "shooting in". it seems weird but for some reason certain 22 calibre barrels pick up alot of copper when new. get yourself 50 rounds or so, a bottle of copper solvent, some patches and gun oil and go to the range. shoot 5 shots and clean the barrel out with copper solvent then oil (make sure you use plenty of oil as the solvent eats pretty much anything). shoot another five shots and repeat the cleaning process. keep going and i'm pretty sure your rifle will shoot straighter and straighter. i know mine did. damn. didn't read the whole thread Quote Link to post
