trader 0
I reckon there are a good few tradesmen on here that must experience back problems at work, and others who hurt themselves ferreting and so on. What I want to know is does anyone do anything to stop putting your back out in the first place? A particular exercise or something like that? I know about safe lifting, kneepads, and stuff like that. At the grand old age of 33, it' s doing my head in, shuffling round like an OAP half the time, and being self- employed, I' d hate to think what the days off and chiropractors fees cost every year. go swimming on a regular basis and avoid the washing up, the sinks the wrong height for men and can cause deteriation of the spine
Malt 379
I'd advise keeping your back supple with plenty of stretching. But saying that, I'm a plasterer, & after a ceiling, my back still hurts like a b*****d. The only way to sort it properly, is to stop what your doing & do something else. Bosun11 537
There are plenty of things that will help and most of them have been written already. There are no quick fixes to constant back problems, any results usually gained long term. I would agree with Bird on weight and good posture....essential! One of the biggest causes with backs is the loss of strength to the spines natural support. Without regular and correct excercise the muscle either side of the spine can fade slightly as we get older. We simply don't use them as much as when we were supple youngsters, then when we do need 'em (usually for heavy and aukward stuff) they simply cannot offer the spine the support it needs...... There are some specific lower back excercises we can do to improve muscle in the lower back but with the damage already done, these can be dodgy to say the least. Your stomach muscles are also your backs support so working on these can improve things BUT don't go hell for leather on the sit up front, I would seek out an expierenced trainer and get advice before starting any excercise programme, especially if its linked to a medical problem. As Trader said, regular swimming is fantastic, you will use many varied muscles with this excercise and with a gentle start i'm sure it will improve both your back and many other areas (you might even enjoy it!) but don't start until this bout has subsided. Oh, and if you go down this route and get results, regular, would mean at least every week.....for life!
