I'd imagine clarity to be more important than magnification  So as SS said, look for 8x42's with good glass. I suggest taking a look at Opticron Imagic BGA SE either 7x42 or 8x42. I've got the 8x42's and they're very good, 7x42's will obviously be less magnification but will be slightly better in lower light.

definately 8x42 or there abouts

if you cant afford swarovski or the like go for best you can possibly stretch to.

i use a set of 8x 42 Steiner safaris they were 299.00 quid and are still roof prism binos...good for the amount paid

It all depends on you type of shooting/stalking as on the Scottish highlands we used to use 8x30 for lightness & a spotting scope to assess the stag. For lowground woodland stalking 7-8 mag perfect x42 or50/56 but a good quality 7/8x42 bins are perfect.

Thanks for your replies and advise. I`ll be looking for something in the 7 or 8 x 42 range.

basil.

Just a tip,if you know anyone in the RSPB, ask to borrow the magazine. Plenty of bino's advertised in there. Some very good stuff, without paying a fortune.

There is also some expensive ones, depends on your pocket depth I guess.

Another thing to bear in mind about the cost, if something is quite expensive, work that out over how long you expect to use it, 10, 15 or more years? Take that year by year and it will seem more like an investment rather than *gulp* that's a shitload of cash.

Wise words John. I bought 8 x 42 Swarovski about eight years ago on the theory that once bought I could forget about buying another. Because they are so clear I don't bother to look through other peoples, however they seem to want to look through mine.

The trouble is if you buy a 'make do pair', sooner or later you will want to upgrade and that is when it all turns expensive getting next to nothing on your original purchase.

Buy the best even if it means no pub or takeaways for 6 months :whistling:
