mac tire 0
as above really....which breed would be the best for tracking a wounded deer? Will your standard hunting dog do it, or would the dog need to come from that sort of backround??? i wouldnt want the dog to be hunting pheasants and the like when im looking for a deer!!! Was thinking Irish Wolf Hound, or would that be over kill....Always wanted an IWH, could kill two birds with one stone.... Any help be great, Slan!
Little Butch 16
Not sure if it'd be any good for deer tracking but spaniels are top bushers with a good nose and i've seen them catch plenty pheasants Butch

dogs-n-natives 1,182
You could probably train an irish wolfhound to track and mark a shot deer. But imagine a dog that size patiently following at your side when your stalking! Thats a lot of dog, so i would guess it would be a disadvantage. Nikey mentioned a Teckel. If I needed a dog for tracking/marking shot deer, I would be looking for a teckel to train up, from good working lines. Which are present in this country. And as far as I know they are versitile dogs and can do many other jobs if needed.

MATTI 34
What about an Elkhound????
mac tire 0
thanks for the replys guys...only reason behind thinking og going for a IWH would be so that rather than just getting a monster of a pet, it would do something for its keep!
Clover 0
How about a Rhodesian Ridgeback - I've read about one being successfully used for this, just can't remember whereabouts. They've got a good nose, got the stamina for the job and they're gorgeous
Simoman 110
Forget all the fancy breeds, HPR's are popular on the continent or try a Teckel as Nikey mentioned............
cúagusgiorraí 57
The wolfhound will probably be to eager to chase and catch the deer. I would say it could easily be lead astray by hare and fox scent etc. Get a prooven dog for the job. Tekels are meant to be excellent.
georgehare 0
I done a 2 day course at college on tracking dogs the other week. Had a danish bloke come in and do the course for us. He uses labradors but says that english labs are too small to drag down wounded deer. Most commonly used are hanavarians/barvarians, pointers and labs. He also said virtually any dog with a nose will do it but obviously some are better than others.
SNAP SHOT 194
i've seen GWP's do an excellent job tracking deer, i'd seriously think about one of these if you need it, plus they are good pets, but need a hell of alot of attention.
kozzi 0
How about a dobermann? The lad I am looking after at the moment has caught a monkjack on my land and will track and flush all sorts of furry things. His breeder might want to get rid of him this month as he has run out of space and I can't help him out any more. He is full brother to my Schutzhund bitch and has plenty of prey drive and is about 45 kilos or so, runs until he falls. Only downside is that he has not been trained, only to come and sit; he has been left a blank canvass so that we could chose his direction when he was two years old. He is steady of character, food driven so easy to train and if his mum, aunt, father and sister are anything to go by, will do protection with adequate training; a real allrounder of a dog. He will be 2 on the 19th June
