air rifle power and pellets

Hi guys I have been reading quite a lot on the forum about the difference in pellets and also the difference in air rifle power using different pellets

so just to clear things up in my mind can some body advise me on the legality of using different pellets and what is the benchmark for testing power, lets say for instance that I use a certain pellet and I chrono my setup and it comes out at 11 lbs/f consistently .

however without altering my setup I use a different pellet and chrono it again and it has gone over 12 lbs/f is this air rifle now an illegal fire arm ? and if so why the power of the air rifle has not changed only the quality of the pellet I hope I’m making sense it just I have read loads of posts where people are asking what pellet and why the power alters and its confusing the matter for me do pellets alter power or am I reading it all wrong cheers mal

i believe that the current max for a non fac is 12ft lbs. this is i believe the maximum it is capable ofusing any pellet.

I am fairly certain that the answer is yes, it is illegal. I believe the police can check it with any pellet they wish and if it is over 12ft lb it is illegal. They would probably check it with the pellets you had on you but there is no guarantee.

To be safe you should always check with a chrono if you change pellets.....

IMHO and personally, I don't take risks with Plod - it's not worth losing my beloved guns!

 

In some counties Plod is resonably understanding, but in other areas he's just looking for any excuse to take your gun off you. Look at some of the other posts about the Police approach to guns...

 

I find a pellet that does what I want (i.e small groups), and set the gun up to that one

hello mate, just read an article on airgunbbs forum................apparently you can fire 10 pellets through a chrono.......and pc unhelpful will take an average.

 

so...

 

if you have some over 12ft lbs and some under.....it can still average at over 12...bye bye gun!!

 

don't know the real answer to this apart from trying every brand of pellet and seeing which works at the optimum through your rifle....setting it to that......then anything else you use is below 12 ft/lbs..........................nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks guys for you,re input it seems that you all have a similar answer like i said the only reason i asked is i have read posts stating vast differences in power useing different pellets and i intend to buy a decent rifle as soon as funds allow and i dont want to fall foul of the law in any way .

and as i dont drive i will have to carry the rifle with me in a slip and also i use a trigger lock as we have loads of bag heads round here who may want to try to take it from me and if the law stops me i want to feel confident that im legal thanks and kindest regards mal

you honestly believe the police will use your pellets ? they will use magnums or similar to get a conviction .

 

tune your gun with magnums to 11.5 and you wont go wrong

also if it is found over 12 ft lb , please dont think the police will tell the courts it was just over , they will make a point of saying it is an unregistered firearm . in otherwords .............. you will need soap on a rope for 6 months.

 

there is only one airgun i know you can work at 30 ft lb and 12 ft lb within secs ( if you was going to break the law that is )

Totally agree,A close friend of mine had his rifle confiscated after some ar*e reported him to the police for having a AK47 in the woods he had permission to be in and they were trespassing.They did everything possible to get him.warmed it up.cooled it down.pellets .bbs.darts.He was lucky!

keep legal and you wont have a problem , start going over and you will be in trouble if you get caught . is it worth it ?

I do find it anoying that you can legally buy an air rifle but you have to be very carefull which pellets you use!! Not everyone has access to a chrono and personally I dont think it should be the rifle owners responsibility.

 

But thats just my friday rant!! hahaha!!

Agree with Logun here.

Should be down to the manufacturer to 'set up' 12ftlb rifles to just that.

I know Falcon used to test with Bisley magnums to get just under 12ftlb.

Pretty sure that lighter pellets will produce less ftlb?

So as has been said set up with the heaviest to just under the limit and you should be safe.

lol at last i think some ones knocked it right on the head thats the point im trying to put over but you put it better than me the rifle power does not alter only the efficency of the pellet should there not be a warning on pellets then stating the the pellet may take your power over the legal limit cheers mal
