martin 332
Went down to the New Forest this morning,up at 0300hrs,and in the forest by 0445hrs,and,somehow just felt good about the day.I met the game dealer who was going out as well,we exchanged pleasantries, and,we went on our seperate ways.I was actually going to a high seat just 100yds from the game larder, and,I was hoping that it would be a bit more productive for me today,as I had blanked the last two times in there.I set off in the darkness, and, spooked 3 fallow does that were in the first ride, and, luckily they ran away from where I was headed, because I didn't want them to spook any others near where I would be.I arrived at the high seat, and,it was getting quite cold with a bit of freezing mist swirling around,so I got settled, and, scanned the surrounding woodland with the binoculars.Just as the very first inkling that it was starting to get light I saw 5 pregnant fallow does crossing in front of me about 150yds away.I had 4 rides going away from the high seat, one of which was a large open space that had been all but cleared of trees, and, inbetween this area and the ride to the right of it there was what sounde like a very large Fallow Buck belching out for all he was worth.I had everything crossed hoping that he would oblige, and meander slowly out injto the wide open space, but,it was not to be......maybe next time, who knows. I checked the ride behind me,and, between two small birch trees that crossed each other there was a black and white flash,it was a Falow does rear end, and,as my eyes adjusted to the light and the vegetation around it there appeared to be another 4-5 does with it,one of which was hobbling badly on her front left leg.I shouldered the rifle to try and get a decent shot on the injured doe, but,it just wouldn't leave the group, and, they then vanished as quietly as they arrived into the wood. Just as I was bringing the binoculars around in front of me,I saw a Roe Buck saunter out onto the wide open space, but,he wasn't going to be helpfull if he could help it,and stayed partly hidden behind a large oak.Patience as you all know with stalking deer is a requirement, and,I sat on my hands for a couple of minutes, and,Hey Presto out he came!I had to wait a couple more minutes for him to give me a nice side on shot, and, the Remmy .243 rang out,and he dropped like a stone, just to jump back up and career off through the wood.I heard a large crack, and,I guessed he had ran into a tree, anyway I gave it 10-15 mins for any deer that may of moved into the area after the shot, but,no such luck,so,I climbed down from the high seat.I walked over to where it had been shot(95mtrs)and found the blood trail which I followed, and there he was laid out stone dead.It was a perfect shot(even if I say so myself - well no-one else would). I had a mate make me a gambrel the other day out of 8mm stainless,so,I thought I would use it to make the gralloch easier........... It worked a treat, and, with a handily shaped hazel he was strung up,and sorted.I was over the moon, and,I hope you have enjoyed reading about my morning.............................thanks................Martin. Guest Ditch_Shitter
DIY Taxidermy? On a Bucks head??? Save that for another one, mate. Please! I used to do a bit myself. It seems some people have a natural gift for it. Like any other artist. If not? It's f*cking hard work and ye make Sooo many abortions before ye get anything even like a result. If that buck means it to ye? Sever the neck way back down against the shoulders there. Leave all the skin on the neck ye can. Then double black bag it. Put it in the freezer and, as ye save up, check out as much work by as many Taxid's as ye can. Don't just look at their deer - study All their stuff. If they get slap dash it may show on other stuff.
