A memorable day ferreting.

Recommended Posts

I went to some of my permission today that is quite difficult to ferret. I tried ferreting a few weeks ago with little success, then I went with my air rifle with even less success! I asked for some advice and was given loads of tips. Anyhow, I decided to try using the ferrets again and I took my terrier. The lady who owns the land was really nice and was thrilled when I arrived. She left me to get on with it. Up went the longnet, in went three ferrets into the stone brick wall and my terrier marked really well. It was her first season and she has come on leaps and bounds, she is now broken to ferrets and today for the first time ever she managed to catch the bolted rabbits!! :D the first one bolted after about 5 minutes and she was straight on to it, the second one bolted after about half an hour and she got that one too, but it was the third and final one that means so much to me - it bolted from a high up hole and ran along the longnet and round the end of it, she chased it right through the garden and it went straight back into the longnet with her right on top of it!! The ferrets were put back in the carrying box and the rabbits paunched and put in the car. I know its only three rabbits and two of them were baby rabbits but I now know I have a great rabbiting outfit in my three ferrets and terrier and Im really looking forward to my next outing. The lady was chuffed too as the rabbits are completely destroying her garden which she uses as an allotment. Its fairly new permission and she wants rid of as many rabbits as possible, young and old. I have to say mind, I made a right pigs ear of getting my net back in as longdogruner usually comes with me and does that, so when I got home I got a lesson in how to collect a traditional net properly :icon_redface: and it was thick with all the crap off the garden so I got wrong for that too :sorry: [smiley=grin.gif]So good lessons learned today and the more I go ferreting the more I LOVE it!! The only snag was that my camera died half way through and it looks like I'll have to buy a new one  Thankfully, I had my mobile with me to take some pics so here they are.

Here she is marking the bolt hole where the first rabbit came out.

This is the terrain my ferrets had to work in.

And here's Molly again just before the last rabbit bolted.

Pretty buggered, If you get a dig Jules ;)

All fun tho, Keep it up!!

Yes, LL thats what I was thinking.........I was so worried the whole time the ferrets were in that wall!! :hmm: I did a good survey of both sides and took a live trap with me. its not something I would like to make a habit of but some situations call for a bit of thinking 'outside the box' and reverting to methods of days gone by.

Guest on the hill
good bag there i bet it was hard to net up :D

No nets were used apart from a 25 yard longnet. I did try to set some purse nets but it was quite clear almost straight away that it wasn't going to work. Today was definately a 'Learning Curve' for me.

nice work...your brave :p you could have tied some purse nets to roots and such i allways take a few without pegs just incase!!

happy ferreting :)
