Guest oldskool
if you choose a greyhound mate then, in my opinion, it would be best to try and find one that can hunt and take fox too... especially when that is the sort of thing your after... the only problem is that not all greyhound dogs at stud will be tested on fox or that type of quarry... personally i would go for a wheaten type lurcher with a large percentage of greyhound in it makeup that is doin the bizz... francolin 449
The bitch is 25 1/2 inches and 65 pound, I dont really want any collie to be added in, it will either be a Bull x,Wheaten x or a full hound... A few people said to me a full hound would be the best option because if I put another lurcher over her the pups could turn out like anything Now I have no experience of breeding dogs so I dont know..P.S the bitch will be used on game that bites back and deer only... mate i hunt with did a brother x sister mateing with his bullxgreyxwheaten grey the pup he kept back is doing well also hes had good reports back about the other pups both sire and dam were game hence the reason for the mateing just a thought if you have a dog same litter as your bitch near you that way you know what the pups will look like and if they like game with sharp teeth good look what ever you choose Quote Link to post

cúagusgiorraí 57
What about your black whippetxgreyhound?, that would do. But my advice to you is dont breed. You say you dont have any experience with breeding! It is always the case as well, that friends will say they will take a pup, but when the time comes, they wont. Dont mess about breeding until you know what you are doing. Can you really take on that sort of responsibility? I have seen young teenagers like yourself, try this and have all the pups die on them, from parvo, mange etc. It is not a pretty sight. Also blatantly saying that you want the lurcher for deer is stupid on a public forum, Are you sure you want that sort of attention? Quote Link to post
Guest MyDogsAGuire
He has a touch of bull in him that dog but I wat something bigger over her... Just because Im young mate doesnt mean my dogs arnt looked after, they are kept in 12x 6 kennels each for the 2 lurchers and 12 x 4 for the terriers.. There cleaned out and walked everyday and the lurchers are lamped 2/3 times a week plus digging the weekend, I have 3 terriers, 1 digging an honest little dog nothing special but will stay till dug to, then I have 2 pups coming on. All the dogs are in very good condition and a hell of alot better than some of the so called adults around me. When I said I would be giving the pups to mate I didn mean just pawning them off to anyone willing to take them, I have 5 lads that I hunt with looking for pups that have been into dogs for years, they helped me out with terrier pups now they'l be all given pups free of charge. I wont be selling any pups they will go to freinds and nobody else.. So cúagusgiorraà no pups of mine will be dying of parvo.. Quote Link to post
Guest CHASER01
Well in a few months il be looking to line my bitch... I wont be keeping a pup as I have no need for another lurcher but the pups will be for a few freinds.. Now the question is what to put across her? The bitch is a Bull/Grey x Wheaten/Grey and GAME The only thing I could find fault with her is shes not the fastest but anything she catches she will kill.. I have the access to a big Bull lurcher of unknown percentages and there could be anything else in there too, This dog is near 28 inches and heavier set than the bitch. A few people have suggested putting a big coursing greyhound back on her... Any suggestions welcome the only answer is greyhound mate id go with that Quote Link to post
shepp 2,285
3/4 grey 1/4 wheaten or bull Definately don't stick any more breeds in the mix. Quote Link to post

I wont be keeping a pup as I have no need for another lurcher but the pups will be for a few freinds.. Why line your bitch just to give the pups away and not keep one back for yourself?...There must be plenty of good lurchers/pups around you that would suit your mates with out you and your bitch taking the risk... I have to agree with Mike on this one. Their is a uncontrolable amount of lurchers ect being bred in this country right now and the goverment is going to do something about it soon. Its all down to a few fools, who let their lurchers stray, around certain council estates ect, that end up getting into trouble with the law. These individuals, tar the rest of the good lurcher folk, with a very bad name!!!! At the moment, all council tenants, are facing a complete ban, on greyhounds and lurchers, due to these few mindless twats!!!! It has already happened in Co. Longford and will spread to all the other countys soon. I can not find the news report on it, but, cúagusgiorraà on here, has the report. Dont breed, unless you have had your bitch a while and she has prooven her self, then, if, you want a pup to take over from her, choose the sire carefully. Frank. Hadn't heard of that Frank!...Looks like things are turning full circle, lurchers were bred to disguise greyhounds in the middle ages now it looks like bull x's are going to be bred to disguise lurchers...or have they already!!!... Its happeneing over here in Ireland Mike. Bull crosses seems to be the in thing right now and breeding wily nilly, are getting into the rong hands, an accident waitting to happen.. As you say, at one time, the lurcher was bred to blend in, and not noticed, now, its a case of, look what i have.... Quote Link to post

Totally agree..................theres far too much emphasis is how big / heavey and 'bully' / Pit looking your lurcher is to the chavvy generation of doggin lads........... And with this comes an elevated bravado of how 'hard' the dogs is........ and how it kills everything in sight........ it isn't a plaudable thing to own a bad tempered unsocial dog that wants to kill everything. Inexperienced dog breeders forget to remember that not only when cross the physical attributes of dogs..'willy nilly'...they are also crossing temprements and personalities..................and as some one mentioned..its an accident waiting to happen. I supose everyone is entitled to like whatever look they want in a dog, but unscrupulous breeding of lurchers is doing nothing but throwing poorly bred dogs ino the dog sancturies on a daily basis Quote Link to post
