hunting with jrts

Recommended Posts

hiya i did put a post up in the ferreting section, with not much success. i was wondering what type of hunting do people do with jrts other than ratting, are they any good, with ferreting, as in chasing after bolted rabbits and retrieving them.

also if anyone has a jack russell that they want to give away, or am after something as young as possible for a fair price.

. please let me know what u have

thanks

Im not being cheekey here, but I would have a serious re-think if I was you.

You wont catch many rabbits with a terrier for a start. Plus many will never retrieve.

If ferreting is what you do most of, and you want a dog that will mark used warrens, catch and retrieve bolters efficiently, watch over your nets and be easier to train than a terrier, then I would STRONGLY advise a lurcher.

If you wanted a terrier because you only want a small dog, then go for a whippet or whippet cross. The collie and bedlington crosses are small, but excellent ferreters companions.

You will find there are dogs bred specifically for most jobs. Ferreting/rabbiting isnt really a job for a terrier.

These are just my opinions! But Im trying to help you though, im not just throwing a spanner in the works.

All the best

both well said.........

jr's good bushing dogs..........as previously said

can make a good ferreting companion but will need plenty of input....and i mean plenty....stubborn little buggers.

i would go for whippet or whippet x as little butch advises

terriers are bred for one job and its not for catching f*****g rabbits.get a whippet.

dont do it mate.....thats good advice............great for a pet..........will run all day but will never catch a rabbit in open fields...........and will not do it easily anywhere else.

wouldn't be fair on dog or quarry...........sorry mate but you need to have a rethink!!??
