gnasher16 30,278
Can't understand why you guys have allowed yourself to be dictated to by our ethnic "friends" and bollock-less little nobodies who allegedlly represent your interests!! In Wales we all celebrate our welshness on St Davids day with flags flying everywhere, kids going to school in national dress and taking part in eisteddfords and everyone wearing daffodils pinned to their clothes etc etc......... C'mon people stand up for yourselves and celebrate your heritage Bang on.......if your dog gave up the chase you wouldnt be happy,if your ferret turned away you wouldnt be happy,if a stranger bopped you on the nose would you stand and take it.......we as proud english people need to look in on ourselves and not expect from an animal what we cant give ourself......and turning away and giving up on our country is quitting, curring out, giving up...whatever words you want to call it.......personally i cant quit on my country as much as it sickens me at times. Apparently the first patron st of the english and therefore england was St Edmund? and Rooster by your assertion....you believe that St Patrick actully drove all the snakes out of Ireland?? And what did St Andrew ever do....set up a golf course!! ( a joke an irish colleague told me the other day....what did St Patrick say when he was driving all the snakes out of Ireland? - You Ok in the back there boys!) Its my brothers birthday and therefore has always been celebrated in our family......Happy St George's day Edited April 21, 2008 by COMPO
Stabs 3
Here's an interesting exert from a book I'm reading at the moment... "English culture has for so long been the dominant, even predator, culture in the neighbourhood that it has never needed to bolster national pride by drawing on traditional roots, and , because it has never needed it, the notion took hold that England had no valuable traditional culture; hence the almost total absence of academic support for the collection and study of folklore or cultural traditions in England." "Yet paradoxically, the result is not all bad. While English folklore has definitely been neglected, ignored, even derided, much of it has, in essence been left alone. Scotland, Ireland and Wales may have gained immeasurably from their having thriving folk arts, and have each used their folklore to create and support a vibrant identity, but they have also had to suffer the indignity of the ersatz and fake: the music hall "stage Irish", the rampant shamrockery, the tourist leprechauns, the Chieftains, the White Heather Club, and pip bands perpetuatally playing Amazing Grace. It is symptomatic of this state of affairs that England does not have that arch-symbol of official fakelore, a "national costume". Nor have we ever taken much notice of St. George's Day, much to the annoyance of patriots of various hues, and I, for one, am proud of that.
