Guest mixy
hi i go ferreting a lot i seem to get the odd ferret stay down the hole for say 20 mins and then show there face with blood and fur in there nails. is it because they trapped one and started eating it? i also dont have a coller so that why i need on. if any ones selling one let me know thanks for looking regards sam Quote Link to post
Nipper 0
a stop end is a blind tunnel underground. The ferret has either been stratching away at the rabbit's backside and the fur clogs up the ferret's paws or it has killed the rabbit and moved on. Get a locator as even if you don't dig it is handy knowing where the ferret is.. Quote Link to post

Guest A Sick Old Man
You must get one mate, I am no expert by a long way. But have dug out a fair few from my killer ferrets, sometimes the rabbits will just not bolt and the spade is the best way. I would not consider ferreting without a locator now, All the best, Sick  Quote Link to post
Cheshire Poacher 6
Definetly get a box and collar mate.Iwould never go out without one too risky. C.P Quote Link to post
Rabbithunter 456
One golden rule - no collar & box , no ferreting. In the worst case scenario, the collar might pack up underground. Had it happen once. so i put my other hob in, he went straight to the the rabbit & other hob, i got a dig, only 6" and they were both there on a rabbit. Quote Link to post

Mitch 0
I dont have access to a locator at the moment, And I went hunting with my Hob. Every warren he entered he caught a rabbit. Its almost impossible to find them when digging at random, However on one set a doug 6 holes and managed to get into the main chamber and there he was having a good feed. But atleast i got the bunny, It wasnt as bad because the soil was nice and easy to dig, but it is really hard trying to find him.. Quote Link to post
Vermin Dropper 2
I wouldn't go out without a locator on the ferrets, not just the bunnies you could lose! I value my ferrets too much to risk loosing them cos I didn't have a locator. Jordan, Its called progress mate....... you dont go by candle light now we have those marvelous light bulbs do you, Quote Link to post
Jordan 1
No your right mate but i think people relie on the finder to much and should realise there are other ways of doing things. Quote Link to post
Nipper 0
No collar or locator no ferreting excellent advice. As for keeping old ways alive pre-locator days, errr I couldn't give a monkey's ..... :11: Happy New Year Quote Link to post
Kane 2
Ive got locator collars etc, very rarely use them never lost a ferret yet.Though ive read of people loosing ferrets with collars on.Know your land ,know your quarry, and know your ferrets.Technology is a poor substitute for animal husbandry and fieldcraft. Only my opinion of course. Quote Link to post
Paul739 0
I always take the collars and locators out with me but only use them if i get a lie up, or the ferrets disappear for a while. I tend to use them similar to how liners were used that is i put a collared hob in when i think the jills are stuck down somewhere. Some of the ground i work on is full of scrap iron steel pipes etc etc also lots of power lines which throw the box out but when there's a ferret down and you get a click on it there's nothing more satisfying than digging down and breaking through. What other methods do you mean Jordan? not using a line surely? I dont think it matters how well you know your animals or the land you hunt you cant see underground and you'll never know why the ferret hasnt come up. Locators are great i just prefer to use mine as a back up, it saves resetting the nets every five minutes and makes it easier for the ferrets in tight pipes. just my opinion of course1 regards P Quote Link to post
