Foxy at it again.

Recommended Posts

I had a phone call this morning from a farmer friend, he keeps a lot of different kinds of poultry as well as 400 odd free range laying hens.

He had lost 25 hens in one pen to a fox last night and wanted me to see if i could nab him.

I went down during the day and cleared up the mess(nice guy that I am, he is busy with his lambs) and left three good sized hens out for bait with their gullet cut open to make them a bit more attractive.

So having done that, I came home and did other things, one was clean the centrefire, as I was doing this I remembered that it has a set trigger, which I had completely forgotten about.

I got the lamp ready along with the gun and off i went about 7:30 to have a chat with the farmer and give myself plenty of time to get in place, my mentor was going to meet me there as we both know the farmer.

We were ready by 8:30 and sat and waited for him in a tree, I wasnt really expecting anything on the first night but at least the farmer knew we were there, securing the permission. It got dark fast and began to rain a fair bit, We flashed the field five times before I spotted those tell tale eyes, which at this point were 350 yards away. We switched the lamp off and began to call(again with my WAM call).

After two minutes of calling i switched the lamp on to find him 180 yards away, this time we turned the lamp down to minimum and kept calling. He came to around 140 before he stopped to think twice and I knew he wasnt going to come much further.

I pushed the trigger forward on my CZ and lined him up in the centre of his chest.

I steadied myself and just brushed my finger against the trigger and Boom............Thud, the 40gr Hornady Vmax had done its job perfectly. I was impressed by the trigger the gun hadnt even flinched.

We walked over and found a very thin and bad condition dog fox, I dont think the bullet had helped matters.

I very much doubt this is the one that had broken in, more likely a release. I think I will use the set trigger a lot more now that I know its there makes for much more accurate shooting even though it can be more dangerous.

The farmer was pleased but I will have to go a lot more to see if I can nab the guilty fox.

The downside to all this is I am going to have to get more Hornady's, I only have two left now.

Good work SS  Helping with the clean up and then going on to nail foxy won't hurt in keeping your permission that's for sure :clapper:

Next pay day I'm stocking up on more 40g Hornadys myself, they're lethal!

Tried a set trigger on a .22lr CZ, frightened the shite out of me, it went off far too easily for hunting purposes IMO. I'm not criticising anyone for uising it, I was just plinking with someones elses rifle at the time, it's just not for me is all ;)

I dont think i'd use it if I were walking around, too risky then, it takes a mere whisker of pressure as you know. I thought i'd try it out seen as i was in a high seat and was stock still, I didnt activate it until just before the shot. It may have helped last night John if, like me you tend to move too much at the moment.

In a cotroled and safe inviroment, the set trigger is very good for accurate humane shooting.

John, i know exactly what you mean, it can be frightening.

When you get use to it and know exactly what your doing, its deadly.

Nice one mate..I love hearing successful CZ stories...Actually i have never heard a bad one.Was that the first for the new CZ?Those set triggers are something else. They can be adjusted you know.

Need pics mate.......

I've had a few with the .222 now and found it to be excellent, I posted a report on the others last week.

That first shot with the set trigger wont be my last, I think it is light enough as it is, I imagine less than 1lb of pressure.

Will make things easier for zeroing and long range shots,.
