stringer 1
Hi Just looking for a little advice. I am thinking of applying for a shotgun and firearms certificate, but 20 odd years ago as a foolish youth I was caught poaching hares with an air rifle (sub 12lb/ft) and was convicted of game without a game licence and tresspass with a fire arm (I think). Duly paid £50 fine and have been a model citizen (well almost, couple of motoring offences) ever since. Gun was not confiscated. I held a shotgun certificate at one time which I think expired before this happened. question - is it worth my while even going through the motions or am I wasting my time? Thanks in advance Quote Link to post

SportingShooter 0
Before you go through the motions of filling in application forms and sending cheques, give your firearms licensing dept a call and see what they say. If you are a member, give BASC a call and see what they say also. Seen as these offences both involve wildlife and firearms they may take a bit of interest. Regards ss06 Quote Link to post

Should i go for the shot gun first or just go for both together? Quote Link to post
stone-cold 0
up to you i cant see a problem, probably best to do the both it should work out cheaper,i cant remember to be honest, good luck with that,if you havent already, get a cabinet because they will come round your house to check before they approve the license Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
If you have the land for an FAC then go for that aswell, shotgun certs dont require land just a good reason. E.g, If you apply for both you will need a letter from a landownder saying you have permission to shoot on his land and with the rifle you want. A good reason could be destruction of vermin or fox. A good reason for your shotguns could be clay shooting, rough shooting and vermin control. As long as you have the land, the reason and the security then you should have no problems getting both at the same time, however, it may be easier and more beneficial for you if you have your shotgun certificate for a while first as it shows you have experience with firearms. cbw 4
I too had this worry, as whilst a youngster I had been convicted of possesion of an offensive weapon(baseball bat), threatening behaviour and a serious driving offence. These were 18 years ago but I thought it would be worth trying for an FAC as I am surrounded by fields and have shot rabbits for 30 years with an air rifle but wanted a rimfire for a better kill and longer range. With my application I enclosed two seperate A4 sheets explaining exactly what and why I had behaved this way and that it was such a long time ago I was still truley remorsfull and had grown up, now having a respected profession and a young family. I had quite a grilling when visited by the firearms officer but it all went well and I now have my FAC and an Anschutz rimfire. My advice is be honest and frank with them and hopefully all will go well. Good Luck. Quote Link to post

stringer 1
4 weeks since I sent in the forms & I've just had a call to arrange my home visit tomorrow. What is the Firearms Officer looking for. What sort of questions am I going to be asked? Will he expect my cabinet to be installed before I've been granted a liscence? Wish me luck. Cheers Stephen Quote Link to post

SportingShooter 0
As above really, Just show him that you are keen on shooting and want to spend more time doing it, as well as this, show him how you have changed, i.e. positions of responsibility at work or home such as kids, married, stable relationship and positions of trust in work. This will show him that you have no interest in doing bad things again. As for the cabinet, he will need to come back and see your installation, as I wouldn't think you could have your cabinet installed by tomorrow. Did you put in for both SGC and FAC? Regards SS Quote Link to post

SportingShooter 0
Well not exactly. The FEO's report is vital in whether you get the nod or not. He will make this report out after he has visited you and submit it to the licensing department who will then get the Chief Officer of Police to decide whether you are suitable to hold a FAC/SGC. He will then advise you that when you have your cabinet installed and checked, you can have your FAC/SGC, if the Chief Officer thinks fit. SS P.S You just need to show your FEO you are reformed and go from there. Good Luck. Quote Link to post
