lukey 1,621
I would just say keep the pup from chasing or hunting rabbits,..I made this mistake but thankfully never dug to a rabbit and she wont go to ground for them,...Try maybe walking the pup on the leash were rabbits will be running about as you would do with sheep ect if it shows any signs of wanting them then a wee flick on the nose and tell it NO! But I`m sure there are others on here who will help you out just what I think Lukey Quote Link to post

Guest whitser
just never encourage them after rabbit and they'll soon get the message. once they meet mr fox they'll ooose interest in rabbits especially once they go below ground. my lad will hunt them above ground(once there's no fox scent to distract him) and walks past live rabbit holes, but will dig rats. they soon learn what your after. top terrierman 90
some terriers dont realy bother with rabbits in ground had one last season that broke my heart digging to rabbits so if it happens more then once get rid of.waste of time so stay away form rabbits if your going useing your terrier for ground work. skycat 6,173
I work my terriers to rabbit above ground every day of the year: they see and catch so many that they know not to try and go to ground on them. If as youngsters they start sticking their heads down holes or start to dig at a rabbit hole I hoick them out and tell them "No, leave it!". It doesn't take them long to realise that rabbits are things they hunt above ground and not below. Very useful if you need a terrier to run loose and check a bank of many holes: our foxes often lay up in a rabbit warren if the holes are big enough, and many of our foxes are to be found in a slightly larger tunneled part of a warren. I can honestly say that I've never dug to a rabbit, though I have sometimes wondered as the tube seemed so tiny that you'd have thought only a rabbit could fit down it! Each time we've come to a fox in the end and I've cursed myself for doubting the terrier. I do think they need to see a lot of rabbits on a daily basis for this trait to be fixed though, and they do need to be out a lot to learn what they can and cant' go to ground on. Quote Link to post
