sureshot 0
But im thinking about taking the path of becoming a Game Keeper and want to ask some questions if i may. 1. What are the chances of getting a job once ive finished college 2. Does the money suite the efforts of all the hard work and long hours 3. If im lucky enough to get on a shoot that supplys a house if i become ill or break a leg for example am i out of the job and left up the creek without a paddle thanks for taking the time to read and reply sureshot Quote Link to post
doga 50
mate the job your talking about is a labour of love pure and simple so your answer to number one is no,in sickness you would have to be srewd enough to negotiate your terms and conditions and youle find places on good shoots hard to find,of course youle have to start at rock bottom and work at it but from exsperiance its a great job and life literally. dickyboy 1
1. No 2.NO 3. not if its a good estate, and your good very slim chance of getting a job, you have to be 100% committed for years, doing everything you can for free, work all hours for nothing then if your lucky you'll get somewhere where you'll get pushed around doing loads of crap work until the new keeper knows you while getting paid next to nothing, but once you've proved yourself you reap the rewards, you are your own boss without the paperwork side of it, your doing what you love Not good money at all but you should be happy doing it You can only be sick or break something between 2nd februaury and about 1st April if you hatch or a bit longer if you only rear.....the rest of the year you are far too busy to consider that you might possibly be next to deaths door....you'll find alot of keepers get ill in february cos its the first time they relaxed in 8 months......the keeper i help, has worked with a hernia, run shoot days with stomach ulcers and done this last season with no cartilidge in his knee, needs a new knee but wasn't time in the season From the questions sounds more like pest control, normal life ased around controlling vermin, money, health insurance etc Thats what i do but I'm trying to be a keeper and have been for 5years, but i set my sights high and won't apply for crap jobs Quote Link to post

dogga 1
as most people will have already said 1.it will be hard to get a job straight from college as most places will be looking for field experience as well as the piece of paper you will end up with but it is not impossible .be prepared to move anywhere in the country if you really want a job as a beat keeper 2.the hours you put in to the job WILL NOT reflect in your wage packet unfortunately.gamekeeping is a lifestyle not a money thing and most keepers hope to make up their wages with perks and bonuses during the shooting season they may then spilt that to their beatkeepers(you) 3.make sure you negotiate terms on your contract otherwise you could be out of a job but if your good and give 100%then you may keep your job but not get paid but it all depends on the job/employer good luck Quote Link to post
