i have also lost mine, i use my knife sharpening steel as it has a magnetic tip, so yes any magnete will do as long as you slide it along the base slowly.

 

its a fecking stupid design the magnet keyring i knew when i first seen it i would loose it and second time out i lost it.

Normal magnet works. Mine stays on my van/house keys.

i leave mine connected to my digging pants so its always there when i need it
