Out ferreting recently I was convinced I knew better than my dog. He wasn't marking a warren I was convinced must have rabbits. In the end I put the ferret down anyway, without his mark and sure enough we got nothing. I learned my lesson. From now on I'm going to trust him.

I'd agree with Stabs' first post and Scallywag's last post; when I took my Kelpie bitch out and began my own ferreting career I simply put a ferret in every time I thought it might possibly be a mark until I got the hang of reading her accurately. Since then there have been times when I've been convinced something was at home though she ignored it and also when she marked buries I was sure were deserted eg cobwebs etc but every time her nose proved more accurate than my fieldcraft.

I prefer a dog to do it all for me ,mine will hunt up and mark during the day,Lamp at night her recall at night is exellent.

Reguarding training I have never encouraged a dog to mark they have all always done it naturally,have never had a false mark yet,nothing worse than a dog false marking.

ha ha... i wanna take THAT dog out ferreting with me!!. theres something wrong if you didnt see some action out of that hole!

took lad for a spin on the old motorbike after last nights episode and geuss what dog did for 2 hours lol.wish id taken the old ferret lol
