foyrious 13
i had a discussion with a mate of mine who said that basically a dog will show interest in any hole, and the front paw and ears going up is no indication theres bunnys at home. My 11 month old pup has been marking consistantly now for about 6 weeks and has never been wrong-even when ive been sure theres rabbits at home and entered the ferrets anyway, and shes not been wrong once. Every time she shows interest therres one at home, everytime she doesnt... NO-ONE HOME!!!! So id like to hear about how your dogs tell you theres bunnys at home, or are there people that think its coincidence or even luck? My dog is always right for me... GOOD TRAINING OR LUCK? opinions please and maybe pics of your dog marking. i shall be sure to take some and post them.... cheers.. steve. (if you read the post early, i said 'my 1 month old pup..lol. typing error, shes 11 month) that would be special..ha Edited April 16, 2008 by foyrious Quote Link to post
Guest smashygadge
my dog is pretty keen as regads letting me no if not he genrally messes on if i start setting up the nets running around checking other sets.if he gets on a set with them in he will sit and wait patiently untill ferrets are let loose.so i think alot can tell. your mates obviously cant lol and sounds a good dog Edited April 16, 2008 by smashygadge Quote Link to post

Sorry Steve,I couldn't resist that. A slip of the finger there, what age is she? She's doing well by the sounds of it,did you train her or encourage her to mark or did she just pick it up herself? A pic of Amy marking. Quote Link to post

woz 260
upto now i wouldnt have a lurcher marking holes!! my dogs have always been lamping dogs and i dont value a lurcher with a nose or that hunt up at night,i have just got a terrier for ferretting and she is brilliant......i have had to re think my feeling as regard a day time lurcher because i have inherited another lurcher and i need to find a use for him,so my second lurcher will be a ferreting dog...been told he is broken to ferrets so this summer im going to get him as obiediant as i can and hope he finds a daytime roll in my team... Stabs 3
Marking was a learning process for both my and my lurcher bitch when she was young. Any interest, however subtle, was watched for and honoured with a ferret until I learned to read her signs and her mark became more obvious as we both taught each other. Her rabbit mark is a foot up and point kind of affair, whereas her if there’s a fox at home, she’ll try and dig herself in. Quote Link to post

Stabs 3
I used mine for both and I did have trouble with her hunting up on the lamp for a short while, but they soon learn what their role is and act accordingly. Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
I have always used dog for both lamping and ferreting. Start them off ferreting when they're young, about 5 months old, then introduce them to the lamp when they're about a year old, big enough to take care of themselves at night: they'll have learned the dangers of running rabbits by day. They usually realise within a couple of runs to come straight to me when the lamp is switched off. Only downside to this method IMO is that they do tend to pull up at hedges to begin with as they're only used to rabbits disappearing down holes in the hedge by day. They soon cotton on to the fact that rabbits behave differently at night and follow the rabbit in or wait for it to come out again. To me the lurcher is the ultimate all round dog: seems a shame to waste some of its talents only using it for one job. Quote Link to post

A pic of Amy marking. she just kind of got to know what the ferrets were there for and after a few months ferreting every warren with droppings outside, pippa just learned which ones we would get a bolt from. As i said, i still ferreted some that I was sure held bunnys and was proved that the dog knew more than me. Since then ive encouraged her and praise her when she marks, and when she marks warrens in thick brush that i cant get to, she has to be almost dragged away from them. I would like to think i've trained her up well, but i think that she has made it easy for me being such a good dog. I have had problems for a while of having her nose down when im lamping, but when she hears the 'click' of the lamp, she concentrates like an old pro. She's almost nearly out of the habit anyway and at 11 months old i can't ask for more.. thanks for the replies people.. Edited April 17, 2008 by foyrious Quote Link to post

heart of wales 19
Everyone to their own I prefer a dog to do it all for me ,mine will hunt up and mark during the day,Lamp at night her recall at night is exellent. The photo is of my 54 kilo German Shepherd Steel marking a rabbit burrow Reguarding training I have never encouraged a dog to mark they have all always done it naturally, have never had a false mark yet, nothing worse than a dog false marking.
