Frozen Day Old Chicks

Recommended Posts

Some folk might think there okay feeding them in the evening during the summer time compared to dry food probably works out about the same price wise

It aint an economy thing with me guys I can assure you..I genuinely think they are ok to feed if in sensible quantity..and they help to span the frozen rabbit etc in the freezer out a bit longer..if I did'nt think they were ok I would not use them..but thats only my own method and opinion..which is really no better than anyone elses...each to their own ways I guess..

I dont think people could afford to feed them as a staple unless you only have 1 ferret or maybe 2 , if you say feed 3 a day on average per ferret

I hope you dont see this as being sexist or as anything other than genuine curiosity Kay..because I aint sexist..but do you work your ferrets and what do you feed as a general rule ?? Its just that where I live in an East Durham mining village full of country sports..I cant think of any ladies who participate..I think more should..

Re amount to feed..Dave Bezzant in his book suggests 2 1/12 DOCs per day per hob..now I dont hold Bezzant in high esteem or anything and I am not suggesting his book is the ferret bible.. so dont take that as cast in stone or anything..and dont all come down on me..I am simply quoting what HE suggests..and not what I myself do..

My thought are roughly the same about Mckay ive spoken to him a couple of times at the midlands and he comes across as a bit of a knob but he knows his stuff .But nothing's ever written in stone in the ferreting game

Thats true mate..we all have different experiences upon which we base our opinions and set our standards..I read Jackie Drakeford in the Countrymans weekly from time to time and some of the stuff she writes contradicts what McKay has written...and some of his stuff contradicts Bezzant etc etc..

My 2 jills get 2-3 DOC a day,if there getting half a rabbit it will last them 2 days,i also feed them pet mince occasionally which they will get 2 bowlfulls a day. Also i feed them lamb & beef sometimes, this is just their winter feed, this summer when i add another 2 to the clan i will try dry food, smaller portions of rabbit & DOC so no food is left for the flies to feast on....

really? baldness?

The problem apparently is a protein in raw egg white called avidin that binds to a B vitamin, biotin. My understanding though is that in chicks most the egg white has been reabsorbed. But I do pierce and squeeze out some of the yolk sac just to be on the safe side. I give my gang half a chick each in the evening 2 out of 3 days. They have ferret biscuits to nibble on 24/7.

Egg-wise, people say if you do feed raw egg then no more than one a week. Heat (cooking) is supposed to inactivate avidin so some people give them scrambled egg instead as a treat.

I think bones are important not just to provide calcium but also to keep their teeth clean. Mine get chicken wings/backs/necks every third day because the bones are small enough for them to munch through. I give them a quarter of a rabbit when I can get it but rabbit isn't easily obtained in a city :( I do give them other types of raw meat now and then but they seem to prefer chicken and rabbit.

Thanks for the reply Sue..I was just curious..I would say that generally speaking then your feed regime is very similar to mine and the guys I ferret and hawk with..but I ve never used biscuits..only dry cat food..

Likewise..what I take with the ferrets and hawk goes into the freezers and feeds them during the off season..or for as long as it lasts..fantastic re the rehab and rescue..great stuff Sue..
