Deker 3,478
I have decided to indulge myself with a new rifle or two...now..... I have a pretty fair knowledge of guns, calibres and ammo but have I missed something??? It must be a field gun but I expect I will throw some down the range at Bisley with it! calibre........ It must be ALL DEER legal, I don't want it to knock me over, ammo must be a sensible price and readily available! Moderator.......as good as sensible and with minimum or no effect on gun balance! Gun...... OK..suggest a make and model please (my preference is for light guns, I'm not a fan of heavy stuff as I end up carrying these around the fields for hours), and I much prefer a detachable magazine....I have a completely open mind ..I have recently been playing with an RWS, which I truly know very little about, but it looks good, feels good and I put 2 shots in at Bisley with it on 200; started with a Bull and then hit a V Bull So...we all know the obvious calibres and guns but I want to know if I have missed something! Cheers Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Do you have a 6.5x55 Swede, Deker, it seems to be very popular on here and it was used as far as I know for shooting in biathlon before the .22 r/f rule came in. Softer shooting than many deer calibres so im told and is chambered in a variety of rifles, the CZ 550 has a detachable magazine. The above could also be said of the .25-06, which i have fired, it recoils more than say a .243 but nowhere near as much as the .270. I know Tikka make a T3 Lite in this calibre. Quote Link to post
dickyboy 1
260 is meant to be nice as well slightly harder kick than a 243 but negligable..........meant to be good on accuracy the 6.5 55 is nice to shoot as well quite a slow kick Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
Thanks guys..I'm pretty sure the 270 is out, cracking round in many respects but I want something a little easier on the shoulder My knowledge of the 260 is virtually nil, I'll have to do some digging! The 6.5x55 and the 25.06 are worthy of a closer look, what's the ammo choice and availability like? Quote Link to post

The 6.5x55 and the 25.06 are worthy of a closer look, what's the ammo choice and availability like? i would stick to a 243 ammo is easy to get hold of there is loads about on the market with most gun makers having there rifles in 243. if i was getting a 243 i would get a remington cheap and a shed load of after market parts for them or if you find mr logic's rifle nice to shoot then get one of the rws rifles. SportingShooter 0
There is a fair selection of 6.5x55 ammo about, they come in a few weights, I have seen 140, 150, 165 gr. The 25-06 has some smaller bullet weights from 70gr through to around 120gr It may be worth trying to find somewhere to try one if thats possible, testimony from others is all well and good but theres nothing like hands on experience. The .25-06 in my opinion is a nice little round which isnt used much and occupies a little niche in the market, sounds like a good fox round as well as being deer legal. Might be worth a look at the more obscure calibres depending on how available ammo is. ss06 Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
I would stick with the 243 if you are going to shoot foxes, or 308 if you aren't. RWS offer a good choice, I like mine and clearly you do If you want something fairly light then Tikka as you have in 223, or Remington because they do the SPS with a detachable magazine in 243 and above. The SPS with our ASE mods was still well balanced (I checked it when I was 223 shopping) Or Browning A-bolt, which is light with a good trigger and detachable mag. And a reasonable price. Or Howa with Hogue stock for 400 quid, nice accurate rifle. Personally I would avoid anything other than the mainstream calibres because you get better ammo choice with them. 243, 308, 270, 30-06 all worth a look for deer. 243 does the foxes as well, so if you want foxes, that's what you want... dwighet 1
Tikka t3 lite in 6.5 x 55.. If you reload you can go from 100gn(possably lighter) to 160gn. I shoot one myself but its a cz. I chose the lite for yourself as you said you were after a light rifle.. If you can take one for a test drive i`d reccomend it for sure...There a nice cal. to shoot with power to boot... SNAP SHOT 194
if your looking for an accurate well built weapon that wil last then it's got to be the new sako 85 stainless synthetic in 6.5x55. and one bullet is all you will ever need the 129gr by hornady. extremely accurate and hard hitting. this weapon is not heavy on recoil, is mild, similar to the .243 i would say not alot of difference. Action is very smooth, check it out and for a mod i would go for the A-TEC. sorted.............. Quote Link to post

dickyboy 1
i really didn't like the 25-06 kick, we have that on the estate and it rarely comes out, i prfer the 6.5x55 kick to the 243, its kind of slower and more of a push than a kick, strange to explain, lovely to shoot though And if your looking at an atec mod then look at the stealth from www.thewholeshootingmatch.com, i took a gamble but absolutely love it, stripable non rust, parts replaceable and i've sot a fox 50 yards from a deer and the deer never even bothered carried on feeding, well chuffed with it Quote Link to post
