no difference in performance mate both will shoot the same. some people just like heavy barrel rifles more then the standard barrel where others perfer lighter barrels if you do alot of walking on your shoot as it will be lighter to carry around.

some people say hearvy barrels are more accurate and dont heat up as quick which is true i guess and if your a target shooter then the heavy barrel is the choice of most for this and the is no carrying the rifle around.

but on a hmr it wont matter as the barrel's dont really heat up as there isnt alot of powder in the bullets to get the barrel hot really. if i where you just see which you perfer to have. i have the annie hmr its a heavy barrel and if i would have got the cz i would have picked the heavy barrel in that. because i like abit of weight to my rifles plus i think it looks better to. what barrel length are you going for the 21 i think it is or the 16 inch one ? again no difference in accuracy. the longer barrel will have more fps but the ranges you use the hmr over you wont realy see a benerfit of this anyway.

i perfer the shorter barrels as there better to shoot out of a 4x4 then the longer barrel as its more compact

but all hmr's no matter what make have great accuracy as the round itself is. all will do under a inch at 100 yards

i have had a four shot groups touching on some days so if your shooting rabbits with it which im sure thats what you want it for then its dead :whistling:

get the eric brooks trigger kit to make the trigger on the cz abit more crisp and your have a super little bunny bashing rifle

and the odd fox mite come your way to just keep in a good range say 80 to 100 yards max head shot and all will be well.

Unless I have missed something the 17HMR an 17MACH2 are available as a 452 & 453 and only available in two formats...

The American is ONLY available with a Light barrel.

The Varmint is ONLY available in a Heavy barrel

If you like a heavier gun or throw a LOT down the range consider the Varmint, if not get the American!

Actual general day to day performance will be the same!

The Varmint is an American, if that makes sense.

I have one and on long walks across fields it does become quite heavy, but that said it's still a cracking rifle. My mate has a 452 American with a 21" barrel although it does feel loads lighter than mine it's to long for my liking, at the end of the day it's all down to personal preference.

You may find a heavier rifle more stable for shooting, I know I love my Sako .22lr but a bit more weight in it would help me a lot I think. Then again you have to weigh that up against if you plan carrying it long distances, also lighter is easier to handle inside a vehicle.

I hear what you say and we are only playing with words at the end of the day but the American is specifically the light version, if he settles on the heavy he will have a Varmint!:thumbs::thumbs: Both good guns and simply down to personal preference as you say

I have a CZ Varmint with a heavy 16" barrel. It shoots sweet and with no discernable difference in performance, the crows arent complaining anyway. The heavy short barrel makes it handy and steady in my opinion especially with a high mag scope, also the short barrel is an advantage when using a sound moderator as the barrel is still only just over 20" long.

I have just ordered a Brooks trigger kit for it, the trigger is the only let down with the gun and all CZ's in general.

It seems to like Winchester Supreme V-max's.
