fishy123 0
Why does no one seem to use mono nets? I can get them so cheap, £5 for 200yards by 4' and 4 1/2"mesh. Is it just because of tangling when putting them away? As mono nets are light and cheap, so I'm thinking of building a longnet from one. My dog when running about got tangled pretty well in a net of the same specs when I was rigging it for fish, so I imagine rabbits would get caught too? Is it because rabbits will rip holes in them? That wouldn't really matter, as after a few uses you just need to buy a new net. Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
I have used them, but found that they go "brittle" soon and before long the hares were busting straight through... Quote Link to post
para1 11
I have used them, but found that they go "brittle" soon and before long the hares were busting straight through... Don't rightly know what a mono net is but rabbits will run threw a 41/2 inch mesh. good luck Quote Link to post
fishy123 0
That's 4 1/2" stretched mesh, surely a rabbit wouldn't fit through that? Equivalent to a 2 1/4" square hole. Quote Link to post

Just stretched the mesh on my long nets and purse nets 4" and I've had them go through. Others may tell you otherwise . Quote Link to post

fishy123 0
The only way technology improves is by doing things that haven't been done before. I'm surprised the difference between 4 and 4 1/2" is so great in terms of rabbits, but oh well. So 4" would hopefully be all right? Mono goes brittle maybe, but does multimono do the same? Any I don't have I can order in. PM me telling me what you want and I'll see. Quote Link to post
mackem 26,224
I have just been using a gill thats been hanging outside since last year in bright sunlight,do mono nets degrade?I used the same gill-net for several years when I was a kid,it was second-hand when I first got it so dont know the true age,but I never noticed any signs of weakening? Quote Link to post
fishy123 0
The only reason I could think of as to why they'd weaken would be the rabbits struggling in them, my nets have never been affected by sunlight as far as I know. Quote Link to post

Hi mate, give the mono nets a try, I don't know what they handle like, but I use 2 1/4" mesh in hemp so it'll probably be ok in mono. Shop bought nylon nets seem nowadays to be 2 1/8". Let me know how you get on. ian. Quote Link to post
netrigger 568
The idea of Mono Nets is appealing,, but a no no !! the makeup of these nets are far to ! let me explain SPRINGY! they do not flake down so well ( net riggers talk ),, plus there breaking strength leaves a lot to be desired... The nets that Fishy123 is on about are probably made up of 0.30mm Mono and are suitable for Sole/ Plaice... 0.30 Mono represents about 15lb breaking strength depending of its origin.. Personaly i have been toiling with the idea of Multi-Mono nets for the simple reason that they flake down better than Mono and proveiding that you can get a net of superior quality and strength who knows what the future holds? No doubt the commercial boys are counting the pennies ( silly fekers ) . Quote Link to post
mole catcher 1
they do not flake down so well ( net riggers talk Thats a term i havnt heard being used for a long while now, last time was whilst working in a rigging shed and an old timer used it Quote Link to post
