Mr_Logic 5
Went out with Deker this PM after bunnies and other vermin, on a few permissions of his. Kicked off with pissing rain, but a magpie stuck his head out, Deker did the necessary there so a good start. Moving on, different permission yielded a bunny, and several misses Then we went to the last place and got cracking. A good sign when we drove through the gate to see a rabbit at 10 yards, which was still there when the rifles had come out of the boot. Rabbit shot, we moved off to the fields. I spotted a pigeon through the gate and shot that, too. Sadly I got the shot right and the bullet really did expand, so there was no breast meat to speak of. Mooching about, the rabbit tally increased a fair bit. Deker had one at exactly 100 yards which went down with a hell of a thump and rolled onto its back, legs in the air, clearly very dead. Great shot, says I, and he had a big grin on his face. And then the rabbit decided it didn't like being dead, rolled back onto its front, and f***ed off at great speed. A very strange occurrence! We spotted one a fair way (140 yards, said the rangefinder) off and I had a go and missed, predictably. Which got us thinking... Earlier, we had found a golf ball. So, determined to find out just what the drop was, we put the golf ball up at 150 yards. Half a box of ammunition later I hit it (well close, the bullet was juuusttt underneath) But, even that said, we were shooting 22LR in a crosswind at 150 yards between us, and even with all our trial and error, the mud holes suggested a group of about 6 inches, which I don't think is that bad given the circumstances. Golf ball dealt with, we put some rabbits out in the hope of baiting Charlie, and headed back to the car for the lamps. Lamped up, we headed back. Charlie had nicked a bunny already, and wasn't seen again. A few more rabbits and we headed in. I had a quick look on what was effectively the landowner's front lawn, not expecting anything. But there was a bunny, 15 yards away. And I got excited because I wasn't expecting it, and then missed it. Hrmph! But, 15 rabbits, a pigeon and a magpie later, we couldn't argue... Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Sounds like a nice mooch around, I went to my new permission tonight and sat in a tree for couple of hours calling for a fox and saw nothing but rabbits, I was using the WAM fox call but it works better on rabbits. Hey Ho! Always next time. ss06 Quote Link to post

A day of mixed fortunes but always fun when you are out in the country (although it didn't feel that way early on sheltering from the rain)!!! And just to add the bits in RED above! None nursing your way, or just pregnant, or a few days pregnant, or a week pregnant or 2 weeks pregnant or 3 weeks pregnant...20 out of 48 about to drop! (even if they were your farmer wants them dealt with so you say). Synchronised pregnancy at its finest! Or maybe, as someone else said ..they were all wearing makeup! And there is no need to SHOUT!!!! Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
I have to say I agree with Deker, what is the point in leaving females if you're shooting for vermin control? if you're not shooting for vermin control, have you really got the time to process all those?! Quote Link to post
