names of lines

pip and some lads are missing my point. im not saying breeding from a line is bad, i know lads that have bred off the same line for years. but what im saying is there is too much emphasis on the name of this line and that. terriers should only be judged on what it does in the ground. i'd breed off a dog of unkown origon once it does its job well underground. ultimately you should judge a dog at his work not who bred him or what line he's off.

Here's my tuppence worth.......... :icon_eek:

Joe Bloggs has a half decent bitch (in his mind).... he's been in the game 10 minutes and thinks let's breed this bitch, 2nd season bitch done a bit..

His mate got a dog also done a bit, different lines different breed maybe..... anyway they breed these two together and have a litter of say 6 pups... HERE'S where the other factors come in: you now have pups that have (should have) HYBRID VIGOUR.... I'm not going to go into it in detail, but it produces the best from each parent... so now you have a litter of border/lakelands... pat /lakelands.... border/russells.. Whatever..??? How many of you have seen or heard of first cross dogs that excel at their game, I'm sure most of you... lurchers are perfect examples...

Pups are sold, stories get told, dogs maybe change hands, couple of years down the line all truths from original breeding have somewhat been exagerated/ distorted..

The dogs are workers... DO YOU BREED FROM THEM....... chances are you are going to lose the hybrid vigour, sorry not chances are, it's 100% you're going to lose it..

You are now going to produce the mediocre crap that was bred from in the first place..... maybe one or two that will work, none that will excel....

breed worker to worker, cull hard, keep breeding worker to worker keep culling, keep to specific lines, proven lines, I don't care what names are behind them.....

the f**k I would breed of a dog of unknown origin just because it worked...

sorry if I've rambled on a bit, hope I've made sense....

THATS PART OF WHAT I THINK ABOUT BUT SOME FELLAS BREEDING OTHER THING HAVE 2 SEPARATE LINES AND ONLY BREED OF THE PURE AND ONLY USE THE CROSS,PURE AREN T AS GOOD.ALTHOUGH I THINK ITS CAN BE A BIT DIFFERENT IN TERRIERS THE OUTCROSS MAY NOT GEL WITH THE FAMILY LINE SO IT MEANS YOUR HAVING TO GO FOR OTHER LINES AND EXPERIMENT TO SEE WAHAT DOES GEL,I KNOW A LAD HAS HAD A FEW DISSAPOINTMENTS OUT OF A REALLY GOOD BITCH TO GOOD DOGS AND HAS JUST LAST YEAR FOUND A LINE THAT GELLED,ALTHOUGH TO PROVE A POINT THE DOG HE USED WAS HEAVILY LINE BRED THE OTHERS WHERE WORKER TO WORKER BUT SCATTERBRED.

SCENT IF YOU READ THROUGH MY POSTS YOU LL REALISE I DIDN T SAY ANYHTING THAT IMPLIED THAT .

a mate of nine bought two nuttall bitches both of which are nearly 2 wont travel. One of them saw a fox above ground and shit herself,so yee reckon i should take a pup off them or take a pup off two workers no major line???????????????????????

read my post again then, if you didn't understand it... the bit where it says I'm not interested in names, if you have issues with Nuttal breeding take it up with him, or the person that bred the so-called 'Nuttal Lines'.... dig deep!!!

if i have a bitch that i want to breed. there's 2 sires available. one is off a fancy named line a fine looking dog. the other is a bow legged crossed eyed ball of wire, dont know who his great grand da' was but is an demon to work and the better of the two. i know which one will be cocking my bitch. THE TERRIERS MAKE THE LINES,THE LINES DONT MAKE THE TERRIERS. if lads always bred off proven workers regardless of which line they're off instead off attaching so much importance to the pedigree then lines would look after themselves and we wouldn't have a situation where dogs from well known lines are jacking.

scent we had a similar situation with a nuttall terrier. names mean f**k all to me. i would NEVER breed off a dog i havent dug too.

also have to say im enjoying this thread cos it hasnt descended into the usual slagging match YET! just lads exchanging points of view.

D mate lots of crap thinking there, not all dogs work no matter what plummer or anyone else says. Its the working gene/blood that separates the good from the crap not the lad who enters the dog.Although manys a good dog have been ruined by macho ,careless terriermen.but a good terrierman ca never make a silk purse out of a pigs ear.

swansea jack you say "f**k i'd breed of a dog just cos it worked" but i wouldnt breed off a dog cos its off a known line. the only reason you should breed off a dog is because its a good worker.

my point is, I'd breed from a worker from a known line rather than breed from a dog from unknown breeding just because it worked, it betters your %age of getting workers..

keep the lines tight and only breed from workers, only breed from excellant workers, and be careful who the lines are passed on to, the messers are there to f**k it up, to make money of so-called names... that's why there's so much shit out there... that's why proven lines are spoiled ......
