all the free state cars surrounding shopping centres in the North

don't worry Pip, it's all stepping stones, we're going to liberate the supermarkets first then we are going to smash up the cap locks key on your computer ;)

worker x worker, you have a chance of getting working pups

worker(from a long line of workers) x worker(form a long line of workers) you got a better chance of working pups

worker(from long inbred line) x worker(from long inbred line) is called line breeding, and gives best chance of getting workers

worker(from inbred line)x worker(from unrelated inbred line) gives a high chance of workers and possibly hybrid vigor

but there is no 100% system to produce workers, you can just stack things in your favour if you have such dogs at your disposal, most don't have such access and have to make do.

WHITSER WHEN YOU TALK OF A "LINE " CAN YOU DEFINE THAT TERM ,JUST TO MAKE SURE WE RE ON ABOUT THE SAME THING HERE.

pip the point of this thread wasnt that breeding from a line's bad it was that too much emphasis was put on what lines dogs were off. im talking about when the first thing lads ask when they see a dog is what lines is he off etc...i think there is too much respect(if thats the right word) given to a dog just cos of what line its off. dogs earn respect by doing their job,not born with it cos of who their parents/grandparents were. my lad at home i dont know what line he's off, but i'll judge him by what he does on the field. if he proves himself worthy of breeding off he'll be lined to a good digging bitch regardless of what line she's off. these nuttal, gould etc......lines lads seem to think that cos a dog is off a well known line that should make a difference when the only thing i think a dog should be judged off is his work. if i breed a litter of good workers myself in the future off my dog and over the years a line develops any future dogs off that line will be judged on what they do not what their parents did.

over the years i have been in a good few terriermens yards that have kept top class digging dogs, all these men have pups down from the way " BRYAN" put up in the above post, " breeding has to be in the dog or bitch, you cant put it in later.

breeding worker to worker with out knowing the breeding behind the dogs is what a lot of young lads do, it may work out its a 50% chance you take, knowing what you are breeding to, and making sure you line breed increases the chances a lot more that 50 %.

i know of guys that have top class digging dogs they dont know how there bred, but they wont breed off them, cause they be taken the 50 % chance.

i think as the years go by and your in dogs a long time, you get to under stand what i am posting, and why breeding from dogs like "bryan" posted up or getting a pup from that type of line is important, or the way to go. how to breed good terriers, how to have dogs in good shape/ condition, why line breeding/ inbreeding etc ... all the answers to these can found off the "old fighting dog men" on the internet.

pip, i think you put up a post asking what would you breed off 1. worker to worker with no background breeding, or

2. a average dog with breeding behind him.

WELL MY ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION WOULD BE NEITHER OF THEM. THE ONLY WORKING TERRIERS THAT SHOULD BE BRED OFF ARE " TOP CLASS WORKING TERRIERS WITH BREEDING BEHIND THEM, SOME MAY NOT AGREE , BUT THATS JUST MY OPINION.

YES p***y THATS RIGHT ITS NOT THAT I WOULD ADVOCATE BREEDING OF EITHER BUT THE POINT WAS IF YOU HAD ONLY THE CHOICE OF THE 2,SORRY FORNOT EXPLAINING

SORRY FISH IF YOUR AGREEING WITH THAT POST YOUR NOT WHO I THOUGHT YOU WHERE.THE BACKROUND IS EVERYTHING,HOW THE SIBLINGS WORK MEANS A LOT AND UNTIL PEOPLE STOP JUST JUDGING THE INDIVIDUAL DOG THEN WE LL ALL END UP WITH SHIT,IM NOT ADVOCATING NUTTAL GOULD BRIGHTMORE ETC ETC WHAT IM SAYING IS THAT THE HISTORY OF THE ANIMAL IS A GOOD GUIDE TO HOW THE OFFSPRING IS GOING TO WORK.

I NEVER SAID BREED OF A DOG JUST CAUSE HE S GOULD OR NUTTAL,I DID SAY THAT THE HISTORY OF THE DOG AND BITCH IS A MAJOR FACTOR AND OF COURSE THE INDIVIDUAL DOG HAS TO BE WORKING TO A HIGH STANDARD.

SO GOOD ANIMALS OUT OF A LONG LINE OF GOOD ANIMALS

I remember dog men having this debate 20+ years ago and I suppose it was debated 100 years before that.

One thing I've noticed over the years is that the man who puts some thought into his terriers breeding and is clever about it ie. line breeds, breeds to a working standard, uses the best studs and broods available and culls hard has ALWAYS had a usefull kennell of usefull terriers.

The man who's always swapping and changing, taking a chance on breeding and doesn't care how it's bred always seem's to be the man who always says "It's hard to get a good one" or "I wish I had one as good as ol' Spot used to be". Over the years this type of man's kennell is never consistant.

Another thing, although we all have our own working standard for our terriers there is a big range of working standards amongst terrier men. One mans meat might be another mans poison.
