SEAN3513 7
just been reading in air gun mag....about calibre!!! it shows greater penetration into plastacine ( dont know if this is an ideal control material) with .177 but the balastic data shows that .22 has greater velocity, retains more power, travels faster etc, etc. is this because of the flater trajectory of the .177? judging by the users of this forum...they seem to favour .22 (as do i) is this due to the beleif that bigger is better??? i shoot mainly for rabbits, squirrels and the usual general licence vermin. i was wondering if any body has had greater results with .22 or .177, is it down to range, pellets, conditions, gun, spring or pcp?? this is probably an age old debate that is down to user preference and has no defining results. just thought i would see what the general opion was. sorry if this has been asked on numerous occasions, but thinking of buying a new gun and this may or may not have a bearing on it. thanks a lot Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
I can but suggest you read this article again a bit more carefully, some of what you said does not add up, and what on earth was it all about anyway if it leaves this many questions?? You seem to suggest you have shot a lot in the field..what have you found, I struggle to believe anyone with field experience can be asking some of these questions??? Quote Link to post
SEAN3513 7
i suggest what i shoot for ........... experience wasn't mentioned........thanks anyway Quote Link to post
jamie g 17
177 for me flatter flying, more forgiving, and hit the right spot even if the pellet is smaller and they dispatch the vermin. weather is rabbit, tree rats or pigeons Quote Link to post

Where did you read that? i find it hard to believe are you sure you've read it properly? I thought that everyone knew that a .177 has greater velocity [travels faster] than a .22 Yet this article you've read says differently. Regarding the different calibres,I've consistently killed vermin etc with both .177 and .22. It's really down to personal choice. Quote Link to post
SEAN3513 7
yes ............. it has photographs of the penetration Quote Link to post
tote 856
yes ............. it has photographs of the penetration What magazine and what issue was it in Sean? Did it state that a .22 has a greater velocity than a .177? Quote Link to post

SEAN3513 7
AIR GUNNER MAY 2008 I QUOTE using a hw100 at 11.5 ft lbs for .22 and 10.8 ft lbs for .177 at 45 yards the .177 hits the target at 6.4ft lbs at 45 yards the .22 hits the target at 7.3 ft lbs .177 at 10 yards retains 89% energy .177 at yards retains 40% energy .22 at 10 yards retains 92% energy .22 at yards retains 50% energy it does say that the .177 has a faster pellet speed and a flatter trajectory my original post may have been slightly mis-leading with regards to velocity......appologies i just wanted peoples opinions on which they think is best for general hunting it seems the .22 has more umphhh at the target giving it greater knock down power as a relative newcomer to proper air gunning ( not just teenage plinking) given the above information forgive me for being slightly confused. thanks in advance Quote Link to post
celticwar 1
it seems the story goes 22 for hunting 177 for targets ... me ive met people that say 177 better 1 reason was that when the 177 hits it target its not that loud where as the 22 you here the loud thud as 22 hits its target so some rabbits leg it where as 177 the still sit there thinking me mates chilled sleepin l.o.l i always go 22 i want knock down power + i got fingers like sausages and got bad habit biting me nails cant get hold bloody tiny pellets l.o.l i say try both spend time with 177 then try 22 see how it goes . stillair1 16
For 12ftlb then .177 for me. I saw the light a long time ago. For 12ftlb you have got to hit the spot regardless of cal and the flatter trajectory of the .177 helps all things being equal. Quote Link to post
