I went out with the .222 last night with my mentor who had his .22 LR, we had been baiting at various points so we were hopeful of seeing at least one, but what a night we were in for.

Earlier on in the evening it was raining heavily so we decided we'd go later if it stopped or eased.

It finally eased around 10 ish, and so we went for a walk, i was trying some new ammo in the .222, Remington Accutips 50gr, which had grouped well when i checked the zero but i hadnt yet shot anything with them.

So on we went to out first likely spot, flashed the lamp a few times and nothing so a disappointing start, we moved on.

Our next piece of ground is about 100yrds from a chicken shed, the farmer had been losing a few over the past few weeks, we shone the lamp and foxy was staring back at us, range 135 yrds, turned the lamp down , got into position and sent one on its way with a satisfying thump at the other end, one dead dog fox, at this point i was happy enough, i could go home and be content, but we had three more bait stations to check first.

At the next station, we were next to a set of coarse fishing lakes, we flashed the field again and way in the distance there was another, too far for a shot, so i called it to the best of my ability with my WAM fox call, it came bounding. In the end i managed to get it to about 90yards, lined it up and bang, a barren vixen in the bag, no sign of swelling on her so i took it she hadnt already weaned her cubs.

Along the way to our next stop we say a few badgers enjoying the few hours without rain, not too many round here but they are increasing. We flashed the field on the way to our next station but drew a blank and even the next station drew a blank although the bait had gone again.

Right, so last chance tonight would be the final baiting station on a different piece of ground, as we pulled in the landowner was coming down the drive in his 4x4, he stopped to talk to us and he knew we were coming so he was quite content and gave us a bit of information, " fox just crossed in front of me down the lane here, big old bugga too"

Off we went and 150yrds down the lane in the headlights, Charlie. Got out slowly with the rifle, leant it on the wingmirror and bang, and yet another thump, another dog. Three dead foxes in one night, any more would be a record.

This piece is only small so we wernt expecting any more, we had a look just in case, as it happens there was a dead sheep in one of the fields, which we didnt know about.

Shone the lamp, two foxes on the sheep, it must have been attracting them from all over, any way i lined the furthest one up and Bang, thump. The other sprinted for about 40 yards and stopped i tried to call it but it just stood stock still.

I guessed it was around 160+ yards by now and so compensated slightly for drop and Bang, thud.

Two vixens , both with no sign of cubs or swelling, but this is essential fox control.

What a night five foxes, I doubt i will achieve such things again in one night but I was over the moon, as was everyone else who had a interest in getting rid of these foxes.

Sorry i have no pics, i left the camera at home as i thought it mite rain again and get it wet.

Thought some of you may be interested.

Thats's excellent mate, Went out last nite as a farmer about 20 miles from me was having lambs lifted, started the night at 9:30 just as it was getting dark, And headed up to the field were he was loosing the lambs. give the surrounding fields a lamp but saw nothing, switched the caller on for about 5 mins, and two foxes at 800 yards were coming in through the rushes, one broke off to the left of us and the other came in to about 500 yards or so.

next we saw rabbits scattering everywhere, and the fox chased one rabbit towards the other which caught it, i never saw behavour like this before, they worked as a team, and we could plainly hear the squealing rabbit meet its maker.

We tryed to call them in but with no luck,

We drove round a few other fields were another farmer lost a lamb the previous night and without lamping we switched on the caller for a few minutes,

as this piece of ground leads up to a steep mountainous area we let the caller do the work, and shone the lamp up into the hills seeing two at an unreadable distance on the rangefinder, So off went the light, i stress at this time it was approaching 12 o clock.

So we called for about another five minutes And a quick lamp about to see one at 244 yards, taking things steady bang, it fell over. Thinking the other would make off out at around six hundred we were wrong. in it came slowly, veering off to the right of us down a ditch, we lost it, but carried on calling

next thing it appears at around two hundred yards, bang, its all over with the farmer happy,

On inspection one was a suckled vixen and the other a dog, feeling bad i thought to myself this is me for the season as i was thinking of the cubs starving to death, and the farmer noticed this and said that if it had not been me who took care of them then it would have been someone else.

As this land surrounds my previous permission i thought it would be a good bridge builder to ask for permission down the line.

At 2:20Am i decided that was enough for one night, and headed of to my bed for a good nights kip....

Thanks Guys,

it was a blinder of a night, its the first time ive shot more than three in a night.

I took some of my longer shots last night and was pleased with the new type of ammo, that dead sheep was a bonus and i have a new permission today thanks to last night, a farmer who is a friend of one of the farms i shot over last night phoned to ask if we'd have look over his farm tonight , big place to around 450 acres, as he lost two lambs, so off over there tonight, never stops. More ammo soon as i only bought 20 to see if the rifle like them and i only have seven left.

Sorry JohnG, cant help it is suppose, sorry to hear you had nothing, i should have gone instead of you as i said, i had luck on my side last night. Nice on Snap Shot, some nice longer shots there.
